Im getting oil in the turbo and intake manifold.

wheres it coming from?

i think its from the carter circulation, this is normal

sounds like possible blow-by to me. Maybe some bad turbo oil seals. Burning oil = bad. Get a new turbo, or get a new seal kit. It will affect the performance of the car when the oil gets low. The friction will not only affect performance, it will eventually wear your car extremely fast. If you're going to continue driving it, just make sure you keep checking the oil level. I don't know if it could damage the compressor side of the turbo... but maybe

this is very normal, and can effect performance, many people reroute the crank vent to a catch, or some just run a hose from it to the ground

depends on where the oil is coming from though... if from the turbo = bad. blow-by = bad, but pretty normal considering the CR

i think it may b the turbo seals because i've extreme deposits of oil sludge in the internal wall of the intake manifold.

ive also got small signs of oil at the turbo air input, this has come from the breather pipe i think.

if i look down the turbo at its air output, i ca also see black oil deposit here.

how easy is it to take the turbo apart and install the repair kit?

the cars off the road at the moment, but i will be keepi it once repaired... the engine has only got 80kmiles on the clock

sludge on the internal wall of the intake could, and probably is just blow-by. Whoever has been driving it possibly liked driving it hard (harder you drive, the more oil blows by).

The exhaust side should seem relatively clean (other than carbon buildup) but the intake side will have gummy residue (doesn't get burnt, but still gets heated up)

I don't know how to test if the turbo is blowing oil... maybe just disconnecting the hose and revving the motor when its warm? (put an air filter on the intake port just in case...). Would hate to see you get a rebuild kit for your turbo when all you needed was rings.

thats correct mate im oly gettin oily residue i the intake manifold and everything at the exhaust end is okay.

so, your saying all is fine with my turbo?

driving it hard :lol: 4500rpm - 4800rpm before changin gear hard enough... thats on a gud day

i do redline it around once a week :wink:

cant say anything for certain. how much play is in the shaft of the turbo? (take off the intake hose and feel. check top to bottom and left to right.)

If it can move quite a bit, then its probably the turbo. That is your best bet at determining the condition of your turbo

With a turbo charger it wont usually push oil out on the intake side. Usually you see oil when there is a restriction to drawing air in. The diesel looks for a tremendous amount of air. Is your air filter clean? A dirty air filter is enough to cause a big enough restriction to draw air out of a perfectly working turbo.

With checking the turbo (not trying to put anyone down) moving the shaft isnt really going to tell you much. The turbo shaft without the engine running is going to have a fair amount of play in it. The reason is when it is running the bearings on the shaft have a cushion of oil to keep the shaft centered. With the engine not running there is no oil there, so typically unless you can see marks where the compressor wheel has hit the housing that test doesnt tell you much.

Try the air filter, that should help to fix up the problem.

Brand new turbo's have little to no play. Play can indicate abnormal wear, from lack of oiling, etc. If there is slight play in the shaft, then it should be ok.

The left/right play (should have said end play) is very important. If its loose left to right, then your turbo is probably half the cause. (I still think you're getting blowby from redlining it)

the airfilter is fine, i change it regularly... clean filter

there are no marks of the compressor wheel hitting the housing..

the pic below shows the amount of oil sludge deposit i've got in the engine, i've used a small screw driver to scrap the sludge off the internals.. :cry:

i didn't get a chance to take a pic of the intake manifold before cleaning it... u can probably imagine how bad that was..

that does look pretty nasty. A good cleaning should help. And a catch can like libbybapa said. Obviously if your problem goes away, its the blow-by. Turbo's WILL burn crappy oil though. but on the turbine side, and only when egt's + rpm's get high enough. Teflon coating would be a neat coating on the manifolds

no more sludge buildup (but wonder where it would all go...)

how would i clean the turbo intake scroll libbybapa? how do i remove this end of the turbo? i removed the centre nut, but the housing doesn't come off...

what is teflon coating? and where can i get it from?
