81 vw D 5-speed shifter

when shifting into reverse it will not stay in gear.... n grinds....  grrrr  in 2-4th gears shifter seems to be towards the middle area like nuteral...  but trany stays in all the other gears just fine...  in 2-4th gears the shifter is not as far back as it was before years ago...

Sounds like you need to do a simple realignment and centering of the shifter mechanism.  Got a Bentley manual?  The process is described in there, very easy to do.  Seems like the shifter always has a mind of its own. Maybe from wear and tear.
