mk2 cast dpin a mk1, so hard to make a dp that works.
« on: April 18, 2006, 10:06:12 am »
so i got the td in to my coupe and now all that's left is to make the dp from the toilet bowl down, but since it has a mk2 downpipe coming off the turbo it's very difficult to make, while still letting the car be able to go into 4th gear.  we shifted the engine to the passenger side as much as possible, it seems like hacking up the flange could allow for enough room, but does anyone have any suggestions?

Ditoo the above comment.  For the money, you get one that fits and is a big upgrade.
Caddy (TD Project), Caddy 1.6D, etc etc.

well i'd like to get the car on the road, it hasn't seen daylight since thursday.  the motors in and running and all me and my dad need to do is hack up my 2 1/4 inch na pipe that i had bent up and get to fit on the mk2 toilet bowl then i have a car to drive.  i do plan on getting of the passenger performance pipes, but down the road a little bit because i need to get this car straightened out and get everything set up on it right before i start modding it.  thanks for the suggestion though  :P

i was in the same boat as you. i ended up driving the car for the past two years with the exhaust dumping toward the ground at the toilet bowl... no exhaust system other than that. i didn't plan it that way but hey, thats the way it worked out.

another option could be finding someone parting out a mkI TD and who will part with both pieces of the downpipe for a good price. but, good luck finding one at all, and good luck getting it a good price. might as well just go with PP or TTs pipe.

....or make a completely new pipe and forget about that outlet/toilet bowl altogether.

hm didn't realize tt made one but i think i'd rather have pp's as it's less than half the price and it's bigger.

agreed!

if you just want to take the car out for a boot and see what she does, giver... dont need a downpipe for that.

..and if you want to hold off on the mods until you have it running well, thats a wise move. however, the downpipe will probably be first on the mods list anyway... and until you get to that point its only going to make the engine run cooler. there would be no detrimental effects to running a 2.5" on an otherwise stock 1.6 TD.

i guess the question is, is it worth the hassle to try to come up with a band-aid solution for now especially since you plan to go with the PP pipe eventually anyway?

i kind of need a car to drive, and i can't really wait for pp to make the pipe and then wait for it to be shipped to me, i know i could drive it with out an exhaust, but that's something i don't really want to do.

If the funds are there,,,,that can be a biggie sometimes,,, order the pipe from passenger and run without while waiting.  When the pipe comes in get dad to weld the extra flange on the 2.25 exhaust that you have and you are done.  That completes your first mod too.  You've probably thought this but I just thought I'd chime in.

anyway, it was pretty easy to get the old n/a pipe to work, we just cut it at the back and turned toward the drivers side and then trimmed some off the top of the pipe and now all we have to do is weld 2 pipes together, and then weld the flange on.  we also trimmed what looks like a bite out of the flange, so that the lever could turn into the bite out, all this could have been avoided by bending the shifter linkage flat, which also would have given me a shorter throw, but it's already done so oh well, especially since it's only temporary.

finally got it all together today, the pipe works fine, if i pull it into second hard i can hear a clank when the shifter smacks the flange, no biggie, just have to stick the grinder up in there.  but i don't wanna make it sound like i am the one doing it, as it was my dear ole dad, maybe i'll snap some pics tomorrow, but i dunno, i'll be busy running around enjoying the new engine.
