Messed with "fuel/smoke screw" - May have messed up HELP
« on: January 02, 2015, 10:19:00 pm »
I was messing with the max fuel screw and everything was going great until I started it up one time and it idled really low and smoked a bit. I tried turning up the idle and got nothing.. Right now I have the screws back to where they were when I started messing with it and it still idles low and smokes, and revs like crap. I am at a loss, and really hope this is fixable.. HELP

If you turned that screw on the back of the pump at all you have changed the amount of fuel it gets at idle.  If you then tried to get the idle down with adjusting the one that stops the lever action and found it to idle very low and smokey it wasn't getting enough fuel.  Try loosening the lock nut on that back screw, 13MM and with a 6 mm wrench bump the shaft in a quarter of a turn.  Then lightly tighten the lock nut.

If you can get the beast to start at all and grab the throttle lever to keep it going you can have the lock nut loose prior to starting and then with a smaller 6mm one turn the shaft inwards, clockwise, and it should gain RPM.

Odd that I was just turning these screws yesterday for idle and surging reasons.  Runs smooth again for me, hope yours comes back as well.

Thanks for replying ORCoaster...

Do you mean that the engine can idle low and smokey because its not getting enough fuel, as dictated by the max fuel screw (13 mm lock nut)? I guess I could have possibly backed off the max fuel screw a little too much and farther than it was set originally and caused this...

I would assume that it would idle low if the fuel screw is backed out too far, I wouldn't think it be smokey because it is backed out too far.. I will turn up the fuel and mess with it more tomorrow.. I can't right now cause it would wake up the whole family.

I was thinking that you were running it lean and thus not getting good combustion and that was the reason for the roughness.  If you play with that fuel screw in the back it doesn't take much of a turn to make things good or bad.  Once I get it running close to where I like it, proven out with test drives, I still bump it a quarter to on eight of a turn to check to see if it can be better.

It is very sensitive, or so mine seems to be.  Go to some of the links or threads on this site to see how the tip of that screw you are turning is connected to the fuel spill collar via the mechanism that controls the throttle.
