81 Caddy needs windshield

I have a crack that is getting bigger and will need a new windshield soon. It has a badly faded chrome strip in the rubber. Will a rubber without the chrome strip fit or do I need to get one with chrome strip? I have full glass insurance so it's 100% covered. Is Safelite after market glass and rubber ok? Not sure if my insurance will cover the higher cost of genuine VW glass and rubber.

Without will fit, mine has one.  I've been pretty content with safelite glass, depending on the cost and
availability of an non-chinese seal it might be worth looking into.

I think the later Cabby had a glue-in, could be worth investigating too.

In any case, cut it out yourself beforehand and fix the rust that is probably there.

My brother in law works at the glass dr. and they do cabrio glue in, in all mk1 stuff.

 I measured the pinch weld on a couple Rabbits.
 The later glue-in pinch weld was 2mm wider,.. more for the urethane to stick to.
 Doesn't mean you can't glue a later windshield (which most people agree is larger) into an early car.
 just won't be as much to stick to.

 No one else has mentioned this difference in pinchweld width between years so maybe it was just the 2 cars I was testing.

 Could you measure the width of the pinch weld when you remove the windshield?

I will measure the pinch weld when it's apart. Is it preferable to install a glue in windshield into rope in opening? How will it look without the rubber moulding? Glass edge next to the metal opening filled in with glue would look ugly.

 The glue-in windshields have plastic trim pieces on the inside of the A-pillars to hide things.

 I don't know which is better,.. rubber seal is usually easier for me to install correctly.

I stuck a length of old white telephone 4-wire cable in the crack and it looks fine on my white Caddy.  Find a color that compliments your paint.

Anyone have a part number for the windshield gasket? Dealer says part is no longer available and been purged from their system and can't even give me a part number. With it, maybe I can find some NOS?

Also, does anyone have the factory procedure to R&R the windshield (the rope in kind)? My Bently does not have it.

The gasket for rope style install with chrome groove I believe is C 171 845 121A. Matching glass B 161 845 101 or 101A depending on tint.

  The part number for  glue in cabriolet windshield (not sure its same) with outer trim B 155 845 011K.  You would also need 155 853 778 which i believe is the rubber trim to cover the lip from view inside car on glue in installations.

Get some quotes from local shops. It's a lot easier with the specialty tools the glass guys have and if it's under $75 I'd pay.

The cabrio glass is a fuzz smaller if I remember, but I used it in all the rabbits I had. 81, 83, 84 and the glue in worked wonders for it leaking. I also had my brother in law do it. He works for the Glass Dr. and was under 100.00 each time.

Get some quotes from local shops. It's a lot easier with the specialty tools the glass guys have and if it's under $75 I'd pay.

Knowledge is power. I have full glass so it is covered. Just want to make sure the job is done right. I paid a shop to do a windshield on a Mercedes a few years ago and I found out after the fact that they used the wrong procedure and it leaked. Don't want that to happen again.

I spoke to the fella I bought the truck from and he said in the box of parts included with the truck is a rubber molding for the interior to convert the rope in glass to a glue in Rabbit Convertible glass. He said there are metal clips under the rope in rubber seal that rusts which is a PITA and if not done right, will leak, that's why he got the molding to convert it to glue in glass.

I'll dig up the molding and get the p/n on the tag attached to it.
