Bumper removal
« on: July 05, 2010, 07:26:47 am »
Is there any kind of something special taking off the rear bumper on an 86 jetta? I looked real quick and it looks to just slide out after unbolting some stuff under the car. Let me know as it looks like paint Wednesday and I will probably take it off tomorrow for sanding.

I've only taken off a couple (to paint).
But i just removed the bumper skin and left the rebar bolted to the car.

If you're going to pull the whole deal off - i'm pretty sure you are right about the main bolts being only thing - other than the slide locks on each side that hold to quarter panels.

Next question, how do you just remove the skin?

Sorry for delay in reply - been a looooooooong day/night.

What i'll call the inner edges of the bumper (closest to car) - snaplock over the rebar. From memory - you just have to kinda lip the edge up along the bottom first - then top edge will pop off easier.

If you start at top side first - its way more battle.
From memory, and its been couple years.

If you get up under there with a good flashlight at dusk or dark - you'll be able to see better about how/where it snaps-unsnaps at.
