sticking wastegate on K14 and K24
« on: June 06, 2010, 02:51:10 pm »
Hi,

since a few days a have a boost issue on my 1.9 AAZ built with k14 charger, a frind has the same issue on his 1.6er TD with k24 charger.
Both charger has the stock internal wastegate, without any extern linkage. The problem is the that the boost decrease at approximate 15psi boost very fast back to approximate 7 psi boost, even when the wastegate is not connected to the pressure line.

All my efforts to bring it back to work with pressured air and WD40 and Diesel has not been succesfull. Did someone here has a section drawing of the kkk wastegate typ and or an idea how to fix the issue without dismount the whole turbo?

Best Regards

As I have just done this to my KKK K24 I would say no. If you can get it off what you need to do is lap the valve and the surface it goes on so they seal. Also screw the bolt down at the top so the valve doesn't open as much when it does open.

I broke all three bolts that hold the wastegate on. The hardest one to get to I had to torch it twice and then weld a nut onto it to turn it out. I am putting stainless socket heads and anti seeze on this when I go to reassemble. The other part that sucks is the bolts take a 5mm hex key and it won't fit. You have to grind it down so that it will fit in the wastegate. The heat doesn't fair well on the hex key, but I think that is all that you can do with that.

Use the wastegate as a slide hammer to get the 3 washer like things out that hold it all together. Just keep tapping away and it will come. I bent my valve a little pulling and had to straighten it. Permatex makes valve grinding compound and it came in a tube like silicone.
Hope it helps.

Hi,

at first thanks for your reply. I had have the turbo in my hands for a couple of weeks and had also dismount the wastegate to that time, because i have had that problem also before my headgasket operation. My main problem is, that i do not know in detail how it looks inside the wastegate, so that i can really focus on how to fix my problem.

I have write "sticking wastegate", but in fact the wastegate valve is free, the spring is sticking.

Have someone here opened a wastegate and can post some pictures or have a section drawing, that would help a lot.

Best Regards

Can a wastegate that sticks closed produce enough pressure to blow a head gasket? I have a K24 and a head gasket that seems to repeatedly blow when I get over 60 mph. Thoughts??

Yes, definitely.  Though it'd only be making big boost with the pedal close to the floor, simply cruising along at 60 shouldn't do it.

You can usually find a cheap boost gauge for under $40 to check it out - stock boost on those was only about 9 PSI.  If it's on a 1.6TD then the overboost valve will pop open at about 12 PSI though - that is super bad for your turbo but shouldn't allow enough boost to cause head gasket issues.

Equally likely your head is warped slightly or something similar.
