2.4 4cyl engine?
« on: November 19, 2005, 06:12:43 pm »
Hey. this is my first post, and i have to say, probably won't be my last! this site is truely a blessing to us VW diesel fans.
OK. now here's my newest dilema. i can aquire a vw 2.4 diesel engine, but the owner doesent know what it came out of, or any thig about it at all, really. he says it's a 4 cyl, but i'm sceptical. i've heard of the 2.4 5cyl in eurovans, and the 2.4 6cyl vw made for volvo, but the 4-banger is really puzzling me!! i've asked and searched my ass off, and came up with squat. Which is leading me to 2 conclusions. 1-it's not a 4 cyl, and    2-i'm going to have to drive up and look. can anyone verify that there is a 2.4 4 cylinder? seems like a high displacement, too. thanks

There is no 2.4L 4cyl engine in the VW stable. There are both 5 and 6cyl 2.4 diesels, as you already know. There is also as a 2L 5cyl diesel that was used in the audi 5000.

toyota made a 2.4D engine...  but surely it would say toyota on it :P

if I were you, I would just get the owner to take some pics for us to see, or to actually see it yourself, and get some more info on it.

There was a 2.4L 4 cylinder but it has oval pistons.  I'm not sure it ever made it onto any production cars though.

In Europe there is a 2.8L 4-banger Diesel that is installed into the VW LT commercial van (very similar in style and size to the Mercedes Sprinter).

Some tax fiddle between Toyota and VW meant that some Toyota HiLux models were badged up as "Taro" but were blatantly a HiLux.
Dunno the exact ins and outs of it.

Maybe a HiLux/Taro motor as mentioned.

it would be german, have bosch parts, could be mistaken for a vw.

thanks for the response, guys! :D i'll definately check the engine out soon!

yeah, the avatar...it's just a compound turbo pic i saw somewhere. you can just size down a pic that you save somewhere online. i use photobucket.com . you copy the URL from the pic and paste it in your profile. to be blunt. here's that pic, but bigger. typically a small turbo spools a bigger turbo?

Yeah. The Taro was a rebadged hilux sold in europe from '89 to '97. Built at the VW plant, and used solid front axle instead of IFS that the north american hilux's got at this time.   I drove one of those Taro's in Mauritania -- nice truck.  It would cruise nicely at about 140kph on the highway, and also handle alot of weight offroading.  Oddly, we had a hilux branded one too, and it was slower on the highway, and couldn't handle as much weight either.  Both were turbodiesels, but maybe one had a bigger engine.

Very cool photo! Do you have more of this engine? I take it that this is from your photobucket account?

To answer your question, yes, a smaller turbo typically spools a larger one. You can see that the first turbo (attached to the exhaust manifold) appears slightly smaller that the lower, second turbo.

A friend of mine works in the Canadian reserves and he says the have some huge old trucks powered by either a 2.4 or 2.5 vw diesel. He asked for the spec sheet and thats what it said on it. I saw a pic of the engine and it looks very similar to the older 1.6 TD.
