I got a starting concern
« on: October 26, 2009, 05:30:44 am »
When starting cold works fine. The glow plugs come on and then go off like they should. You turn the key and it fires right up 1st crank.
After I drive to work about 26 miles or even shorter trips. If I let it sit for short periods of time say half hour to an hour. When you go to start it again no glow plug light and it takes 6 to 10 cranks for it to start. This started after the head gasket/turbo/ring job. I don't seem to have air bubbles in the clear fuel lines. I installed a mr. gasket pump thinking it might be a fuel problem it didn't help. It is a 1.6L NA 1982. Any Ideas where to start looking? One other thing the battery checks out good it is the same as before the mods.

Try pulling the coldstart knob and see if it helps. If it does then your timing is slightly retarded......
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

Do a voltage drop test on the entire starting circuit.

The next time you can get it in that condition again, try roll cranking it. If it roll cranks easily - you probably do have a problem with too much resistance on cables, or bad grounds.

Should need a good engine ground cable and body ground cable.
With low ohms when tested.

Leaky/bleedy injectors can hamper hot starts too - sometimes.
