Injection pump woes....(again)
« on: July 02, 2009, 05:44:33 pm »
Well heres the issues, i built a na and converted it to turbo, the pump i've got does not have a cold start advance. When i first ran the engine, after the rebuild, it ran fine but didnt like to start, it would, but not smoothly and with white smoke. After it would warm up it ran fine. I wasnt able to time it in the begining, but i finnaly got around to doing it and set it up to 1.00mm. After that, no more problems. But as of recently i drove it to wyoming, which was 2400 miles, and it is doing it again, just the same as before i timed it. It starts first crank, smokes white and heavy untill warm. The injectors have been rebuilt and set to 155bar..... Ive tightened averything i can access on the outside of the pump, and have installed a check valve on the supply side of the fuel line.

Is it possiable for the alltitude change (5500ft more) to be giving me these problems?

Any ideas or thoughts would be great.

Thanks, Cambo

Couldn't tell from your post if you rebuilt the injectors before or after the problem resurfaced.

It sounds like the rebuild bumped the injectors from 130bar to 155bar, the added pressure needed to pop them at 155 will retard the injection so may need to advance the timing a bit, like 1.05mm for starters.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

All your pump mounting bolts are tight?

I know for a fact that they were tight when i was done timing it.... Tonight i will put a wrench on em and see if they stayed tight.

So, if its 83% of what it used to be, that means that i need to change the timing to more advanced or retarded?, to make up for the lower cylinder pressures?

Well i wish i could, as i said earlyer it doesn't have a cold start advance lever.... however it does have a high idle lever at the top rear of the pump, as its on the engine, does that have any effect on timing?

That is an unknown...... I bought it from the same guy that i got the turbo from, he says it came from someone in europe and it is a franken pump, he numbers dont match with whats in the pump, so from that i guess i didn't awnser your question....mainly because i dont even know.

Yeah, definitely no cold start on that pump... You should be able to find one to bolt on in place of the timing cover though.  If you find someone with the 109 style pump you should be able to get all the little bits.
