How to tell if its a TD?
« on: June 23, 2008, 06:47:48 am »
Hey everyone!!

My TD motor got fried and i have an engine lying around which i bought from junk yard.

Its an NA at the moment and i used it for a while about 6 months ago.

My question is that can i tell by looking at the Cylinder/Block if it has oil cooled pistons or not? cuz the valve cover says its a TD but its has NA ip and no turbo.

So if theres any way i can know... like may be the part number or anything else... without removing the oil pan?

Cheers!

the oil pan should have a fitting if its a factory turbo - or if the engine is lying around out of the car just yank the sump - and peer with a torch its not much work

maybe its a ecoturbo,

btw how did you fry your engine. Dont tell me the head is fragged?

Hmm....  i reckon i'll have to do that!

Zulfiqar... i told you about the much needed headjob... thats the only problem, rest of the motor is perfect..  but i dont really wana get the job done without having the original parts and i dont really wana spend on that cuz im going for the 1.9TD anyways...

Altho you have convinced me, but i cant explain all the terms to the mech/machinist cuz they are not gna understand and i dont know the terms they use so i believe i wont be able to get a proper job done; like u managed!

So im just gna throw in the NA for a month or two and by that time i'll have my pistons for the 1.9 TD thats the only thing i need now.. will swap again then!

BTW, u said it mite be an ecodiesel....  ecodiesels dont have oil cooled pistons??

If this NA of mine turns out to be a TD, i'll just  use the turbo and the IP from my current TD and i'll have myself another fantastic motor!

easyest bet look around the engine block ... if it has 1 inch high letters saying 1.6 TD its a 1.6 TD... if not it says !.6 D in which case no underpiston coolers...

well - the machinist I have lets me run his equipment - and I also have an array of tools to get the job done. I redid the head myself, The machinist couldnt understand what I wanted to do, so I did the valve job myself.

Thats how I do all my work - I have one mechanic I used only as a fitter sometimes when I was in the office or too occupied - thats about the only help I outsourced

and Ecodiesels use oil squirters - the only diff is the I/P is missing the LDA
