Help Please!!!!
« on: June 01, 2008, 06:49:23 am »
This is the first time i am writing to this forum...
I drive a 85 golf diesel, 1.6 N/A, engine code ME.
the other day me and a friend decided to advance the pump timings to make my car faster. .. so we took on the challenge and as far as i am concerned, succeeded.  :P
yesterday someone told me that advancing timings like this is not good for the engine.. ... i have a pic here to give you guys an idea of how advanced my pump is right now... the two marks which are supposed to be alligned are about 10 mm apart....

Here's some pictures on the generally accepted method of setting the static timing:

As you can see it's a game measured in thousandths of an inch... no real way to eyeball it and know what you are really doing.

andrew... so u mean to say that i can keep driving my car like this....
the thing is that the timing dials are not available in my country, Pakistan.
so i need to know whether is it ok to drive the car like this or should i get back to the alligned setup... or reduce the distance btw the two marks...

ok.... i ll try to source the gauge...
I no that my pump is advanced at the moment... the idle is considerably rough, as compared to before and engine respponse at the higher end is awesome.... it likes to rev to the limit.... i just want to no whether it is harmful to drive with the advanced pump, for the engine....
