need some opinions on a potential new car
« on: November 07, 2007, 09:07:16 am »
I'm thinking of picking up a 83 TD Jetta. I'm looking for a second (third, fourth etc) opinion of the car

This is what I know so far

200k kms on the car
The cylinder head needs to be replaced - replacement head in the backseat
injectors are rebuilt
solid body
new fuel tank, exhaust, shifter, brakes
May need windshield, new one included
He rebuilt the bottom end, bearings, seals
An unknown amount of KMs later the turbo seals failed and it ran out of oil which is why it needs a new head
It still needs a turbo replacement

What are the odds that the block is still good? Anything seem fishy about the story? Anything I may be missing?

Thanks guys

Normally I'd grab it without hesitation but I don't have a garage and it snowed the last 3 days :brrr:

sounds legit but who knows. know anyone who's dealt with him before? depends a lot on price... i know if something is wrong you'll just replace it or fix it, so if its cheap enough.... why not?

worse comes to worse you can throw the engine in from your old jetta...unless you parted it.

I forgot about my old engine. It's still complete

Oh yeah, it's $1000 OBO you should buy it Nate if I don't

Tyler, I hear ya on the "working outside when it's -10C with a wind blowing snow down your shorts" thing, but I have to say, it sounds like a great deal and since you already have an engine to drop in it.....pray for a good weekend real soon.

Mind you, that second caddy looks sweet.  8)

Decisions, decisions.

what a deal, i'll for sure consider it if you aint gettin it. Although i did buy a gasket set today for my diesel chevette so maybe i can get that thing going soon, also i found another for sale, if its cheap enough i'd for sure get that over the truck.

I say go for it! You have an engine just in case, and it's cheap!

If it's too cold and snowy bring it down to my neck of the woods, you can use my driveway, The weather is perfect to be working on cars outside this time of year. You'll even have a tan to show for it

lol thanks guys. One of my friends in my course offered the use of his garage  :D It's not heated and has dirt floors but it's a thousand times better then snow.

I'm looking at the truck tomorrow Nate, I'll let you know

Where did you find the gasket set for the vette?

I'm probably picking the car up tomorrow so I'll take pictures then. LOL Nothing like driving parts cars. This one was in an accident too

I like that body kit Duane, too bad we are so far apart

I think I'm going to see how far I can push this motor before it blows up
