Just Bought A 1992 Jetta Diesel

I just bought a1992 Jetta Turbo Diesel 1.6 L and i was wondering if there was somebody who is expierianced with tuning these engines.
I need to know what performance parts i can/should get.

163kph isn't quite sad...  if speed is what you're after, you will need to either upgrade the 5th gear, or a whole new tranny itself.  you will notice that your car burns oil going at those speeds, so don't forget to check oil regularly.  the harder you drive it, the more oil it burns.  smooth acceleration and better fuel economy & very low oil consumption if any.  those are the rules of the diesel.  turbo warmup = 1-2 mins of ginger driving.  turbo cooldown - depends on how hot of a day, and how hard and long the car was run.  regular dino oil sitting in a super heated turbo will start to 'coke' inside the hot turbo, and the next time you start your car, nice little bits of rock hard deposits will be sent into oil.  synthetic oil really helps in this area, greatly reducing the risk (if any) of oil coking from the turbo.

good luck with the diesel!  don't forget to run an additive for lubricity, anti gelling, and cetane boost.  it will greatly increase your winter starting capability.

im hoping to upgrade the car all round(accel, top speed, milage, handling etc)

- Giles pump (your pump will probably leak soon anyways if it has never been rebuilt) check out vendor section for his threads.
- larger downpipe (see PassengerPerformance - 935racer)
- intercooler (any is better than none, but piping, and location is pretty crucial.  if you can't get rid of the heat, it will be doing more bad than good!)

get those three things, and you won't be dissapointed!  i'd imagine if your car doesn't burn much oil going 160kph then your motor is pretty good and solid.  just make sure to run a good synthetic oil AND FILTER (NO FRAM!!!) and you will help keep it that way for quite a while.

new suspension (heavy duty struts & shocks and lowering springs) will greatly enhance driveability.  mine is a pretty bumpy ride, but it handles quite well.  ball joints changed, and new tie rods are next (i've opted for the whole tie rod... who knows what kind of damage the old ones have?)

one thing i recommend that i dont think anyone does, is to bleed the brake system.  i just had a run in with a leaking wheel cylinder in the rear... not cool!!! flushing out the old fluid with new fluid (at the time i bought the car...) might have bought me an extra couple of years.. or more?  the shoes still had plenty of meat on them too... but soaked in brake fluid... a shame indeed!  the other side was toast though... the pad on one side had actually fell a little bit down the shoe.  i'm surprised it didn't fall off  :shock:.

little maintenance things like lubricating the shifter linkage etc is a great idea.  i had my car undercoated from Rust Check (that cool rust proofing stuff) and amazingly afterwards my shifter was very loose and lubricated!  i could have done it myself, but i thought i would need to buy a new linkage kit to solve the 'sticky' shifter issue.

try to read up some archived posts about little maintenance tips.  draining the water separator, coolant flushes, bushings etc...

after i get my lowering kit and new struts etc im gonna be redoing the ball joints and all that getting a lil stronger ones just incase

ya i need to bleed mine again, i did it when i replaced the brakes but they still dont work right   luckily i have the tranny to slow me down lol

Giles is a Bosch pump Guru who has developped his own unique mods to our diesel pumps.  Better performance and fuel economy is what it's all about.  after a few years it would more than pay for itself.

filters... try to at least get a Bosch.  Mann filters are good.  (the new bosch aren't made in Germany AFAIK)

if your brakes aren't working, it could be the vacuum assist, or a bunch of other problems associated with the rear brakes.  

i would recommend that you rust proof the car with rust check to 'loosen' up stuff.  they lube the car up pretty good.  it's just a good idea to do it.  or at the very least, lube up your shifter linkage.  smoother and faster shifting rules!!!

oh ok so where can i get a Giles Pump?
im liking the effects of it (better performace and fuel economy)
as it is my car gets like 53 MPG

ok i know i could get bosch filters so ill get one of them

i definatly need to bleed the rear brakes again it wasnt done right when my dad did it

i know a guy who can make me fiberglass bodykits so i think i might do that, im going to get him to shave my doors too    i hate the look of the black trim so im gonna get him to remove the trim and even out the ridge where the trim is i think ill keep the handles though

so what exactly is the rust proof is it like a paint they spray on or what?
