synthetic oil after 1.9L AAZ rebuilt????

i am having my AAZ rebuilt and have heard myths about not using synthetic right away as its to thin and rings have not seated and it will burn it.......use like rotella or something for a couple oil changes then switch is this correct i just spent alot of money on this rebuilt and want to make sure i start out right

please let me know what you think

I would run at least 10,000km (6000 miles) before switching to synthetic. Run a 15-40 Rotella T for breakin.

Do not run synthetic till engine is broke in.

there is a topic in th FAQ that deals a little with this. I too am interested in this as I want to start my turbo project this summer. I think it is Mike_W that says to use a conventional 10w30 that is diesel approved for 1,000 miles when you tighten the head bolts for the last time then get rid of it. What I am really interested in is what then? Do you then go to a 15w40 conventional or can you go right to the synthetic? Maybe more questions for you but it is somewhat covered in the FAQ. I would run conventional much longer as it takes a Diesel longer to fully break in.

I'm probably gonna run my AAZ for at least 50K on conventional before switching....  today's conventionals are damn fine oils too, so it's not like I'm in  a huge hurry, and diesels do take longer to break in.  'Course, they last longer too...

I believe Myke found Mobil 1 Clean High Mileage 10W30 is conventional and diesel-rated... sadly no one in Canada seems to carry it.   :cry:

I'll third. Using synthetic in a freshly rebuilt engine is a good way to guarantee that it does not break-in properly.

Wait 20,000miles at the least before you switch to synthetic.

I got ma merc e300TD engine rebuilt and used mineral oil for the first 1000kms... and then went for fully synthetic...  is that a problem??

the car seems to be alrite but it gives out white smoke at first start ups of the day....  is that cuz of using synthetic without letin the engine to break in??

Some white smoke is normal on a cold start. Most of it is just condensation in the air.

I agree with the non synthetic during breakin.
Also, drive it kinda hard, take it through the revs (all the way) a lot to seat the rings. City stop and go driving is great for this, highway trips at a constant rpm are not so great.

A good light 10w30 "C" rated oil is best IMO, light because brand new seals don't need a ton of oil pressure that heavy oils can create.

Mobil Clean 5000 10w30 is my usual choice for first fill.

But to play devils advocate - manufacturers have said that almost all cars are coming factory filled with synthetic these days, so I'm curious how they are achieving proper break in, this defies all knowledge and information I've seen.

Because of the manufacturing process and closer control of tolerances and surface finishes. I read about it somewhere, though I don't remember the site.

Also check with your fleet oil distributors, ex. castrol makes a fleet oil which used to be called drydene, that stuff is damn good see link below
