removing alt/ac bracket tricks?
« on: April 17, 2011, 01:07:08 am »
I've got a non ac bracket that im going to be putting on the 1.6 I just got. Im going to do a new water pump I believe this one is the OG.

Is there a trick to getting off the bracket without taking off the injection pump? I've tried sneaking some wrenches back in there to get the top bolts for the bracket off and no luck at finding the right way to get em.

If your car has an AC bracket in there, it's nearly impossible to get it out without removing the pump.

I just got the top bolt closest to the belts off, the right side top bolt is what im trying to figure out.  I think with the correct offset wrench I could sneak it in there to break the bolt.

2am on a saturday night and im out in the garage tinkering with an engine. Party on!

Yeah. I've heard some people use offset box wrenches to get them off. But sometimes, those suckers are in there TIGHT. I just pull the injection pump. It doesn't take much to re-time the pump.

Yeah ill be going to harbor frieght tomorrow to pick up some deeper offset wrenches.

The other 3 bolts were fairly easy to remove so hopefully that 4th one isn't stubborn when I get the right tool to take it out

Its off.
Without taking the injection pump off.
Stoked.

I went to harbor freight and picked up a $10 set of obstruction wrenches.

It fit right in there and I had good leverage to break the bolt.

I know man.
Doing some cleaning of the engine right now. Just went to go check out the non ac -alt bracket I got the other day to see what's up and its the wrong bracket.

It fits perfectly on a 1.8 gas engine. But not on  this. The $5 bucks I spent on it won't be wasted. It'll end up going on my 86 golf.

The gas engines mount the alt where our Injection Pumps are, it will fit the diesel block.. but not with the IP there.

the gas engines also have different pullies, and offset for the alt.. the brackets and pulleys are DIFFERENT.

the crank sprocket is 6mm wider on a diesel engine, so therefore, all the pullies must be +6mm over the gasser parts. the alternator mount and pulley are special on the non a/c setup. (all the pullies are special for that matter, but you gotta have a matched set for it to work without needing spacers somewhere..

(thats why i about shat a Buick when i got my newest GTI and it had a full setup of non a/c, non p/s pullies on the car still!)

Im learning man!

I wanna run my power steering in this thing, I just got find the right pulley/belt setup.

Argh!

I've been on a diesel kick ever since my gf/ex-gf.... got a mk4 tdi jetta. I love everything about it.

Converting a gas cabriolet a car I know almost everything about, to diesel which I know almost nothing about is goign to be a fun challenge.

I was hell bent on getting the bracket off cause I feared taking the IP off and retiming....

Now that I did that, im realizing I gota get a bunch of stuff to do what I gotta do!

It will all be worth it in the long run though
