When I worked at the shop we always used a thread locker type sealant on those metal caps.

If it's the front one that is leaking, thread a slightly oversized tap into it and it should pull out once it starts spinng. Then install the new one with sealant. Make sure to have the diesel drained low enough in the pump so that you can ensure a clean surface for the sealant. If it's the back one, I'd just pull the top of the pump off assuming everything is nice and clean and you aren't risking putting dirt into the pump.

You could also have excessively worn injectors pushing too much fuel out the returns. Remove the return lines between the injectors and observe how much fuel is coming out. If you have extra line you could rig something up to go into catch containers to measure it and avoid a mess.

Also, are you sure you have an out bolt in the out port of the pump?

I'd try it with another electric pump and see what happens. To me it sounds like you are getting air in the pump and the timing is dropping off causing smoke, EGTs and lack of power.

Are you saying your EGTs are 1300 when this happens or that 1300 is the max you can hit?

I don't think you need a pump but they can help. They can also cause issues as you've found.

Are you able to hook a vacuum gauge up then? How about running a clear, extra long fuel hose so you can monitor for air in fuel under high demand while driving (or have a helper do it, or a video camera)?

This is an AAZ right?
