I have a 84 rabbit, i wanted to put a gauge cluster out of a jetta in it with a tach,(mine has the clock) would this be hard to do, where would you get a signal for the  tachometer??

The signal is from the W terminal on the alternator. It is usually stamped right on the alternator casing.

Are you planning on installing the complete mk2 dash?

I just wanted a tach for my rabbit, I was hopeing i could just bolt up a cluster with a tach and run wires?
is it not this easy?

The diesel tach and gas tach have different circuitry because the signal from the alternator of a diesel engine is at a completely different rate than the signal from an ignition system on a gas engine.

There are various conversion techniques... changing the on-board components (ie parts and soldering), a signal conversion box, and of course finding a diesel cluster rather than a gas cluster... for Rabbits a bit of a holy grail.

Search here and at www.vwdieselparts.com and you'll find lots of discussion about the conversions.

Me:  I bought an aftermarket VDO diesel tach for my Rabbit truck... worked very well.

Local gauge store ordered it in from VDO... here's a pricey example from eBay that lists a VDO part number:
