I've tried every combination of wording in searches on this and other forums and came up empty handed (why the hell are forum search engines so horrible?)
Anyone tell me what the installed height difference between the two are?
Thanks!

from what i understand ,and have seen/heard is:
the "later " 1.9 engine differs from the "old" 1.6 engine in cyl block height
by 5/8 of an inch(approx 16mm)
and i read that in an old parts place catalog, cause they mentioned that if you used the same exhaust, and swapped to a 1.9 from a 1.6...
you probably will have to lengthen the d/p by 5/8 of an inch,so it doesnt hit the "transmission tunnel"
some vehicles may have hood clearance issues with a turbo pump
my 91 jetta 2 door with a 1.9 block /1.6 head has a "altitude compensation" type pump(read turbo/lda, but its a na engine),,,,and it just rubs on the underhood insulation+makes a small impression on it

Great, thanks for the info! btw, 16mm is also the difference between the 2.0L ABA and 1.8L gassers... I'm measuring up a 'snake' style turbo manifold for my mTDI Caddy project, and the old 1.6 n/a lump is in the engine bay so I can take measurements.

Has anyone actually measured this? does anyone know for 100% sure?
Does anyone have a 1.6D/TD block kicking about they would care to measure?
I can confirm that a 1.9 AAZ block is 294mm tall, I've just been next door to measure one!
All it is, that we're making some turbo spacers to drop the turbo down when we convert 1.6TD T3's to 1.9TD, so we can add a EGT probe, so the oil return line from the 1.6TD fits, and to take stress from the exhaust system.
We don't have a 1.6TD block kicking about anywhere...

Measured from the oil pan surface to the deck.
1.6L = 279mm
1.9L = 297mm
This is with a tape not calipers, so it maybe a little off but you get the idea.
-
Thanks!
I just measured also with a tape and get a different reading! 294mm!
Heh..
Are you confident?
;D
-
I could be off a bit, as the aaz block was more in the dark than the 1.6. Just split it and call it 295.5mm ;D
-
it IS 16mm..
its the same as the difference between the short block, and tall block gas engines..
-
1.6l diesel crank centerline to deck - 220mm
1.9l diesel crank centerline to deck - 236mm
So as ROR said 16mm difference.
-
And what about the 1.9L TDI engine?
Is it the same value of 236mm?
-
Yes it is.

Thanks

Many thanks, much appreciated.
