Title: New to board, don't have a VW diesel yet but soon....I hope
Post by: DaGGer on July 31, 2007, 09:07:51 pm
I'm in the midsts of looking for a jetta or rabbit thats a turbo diesel. I don't really want a NA diesel. I'm guessing the engine I'm looking at is a ID as its an older engine. MKII and before.  So I've been looking around almost found one (guy posted it up as Or best offer, called and asked about it.  it was in good condition with 130,000 miles and its a 1990 but then the guy drops the bomb of  him wanting $4,500 for. So yeah right, thats fine he can keep it) but is there anything I should really look for when getting one. I know a lot of the engine have crack heads so I'm going to swap in a 1.9L head. I plan on rebuilding it and doing a few power mods for it because I could drive something that slow. But on VW vortex I talked to a guy that lead me onto my goal and he said that with the mods I want to I'd probably be in the range of beating 16Vs so thats pretty good and quick for me along with it being nice and agile(SP). that in its a dependable engine and I can still get 40 mpg LOL.

the 1.9 heads are usually cracked as well... but pay the cracks no mind they usually are harmless.if u have trouble finding a td just get an na an swap engines.

Chances are you won't find a mk1 TD, they are very hard to come by. You'll need to do an engine swap.

If you are handy with tools it'd probably be cheaper to find a solid NA shell and a rusty TD and do a swap. Solid TDs will sell for alot, although I posted mine for $2000 and didn't really get much interest

well I thought I've read that a NA diesel engine doesn't have the setup to run the type of boost that an already turbo engine does. I want to run somethingl ike 20-25 PSI maybe more. i don't really know.

I think hes talking about a full on Engine Swap, not just adding a turbo. Like, you take the n/a engine out and put the TD engine in there.

It's really not that bad if you've got some tools and the manuals.

Diesel to diesel swap is probably the easiest swap ever :P It's like, 10 wires, three engine mounts, two fuel lines, clutch/speedo wire, downpipe and shifter linkage. Oh and the driveshafts...
