I have a 1980 Caddy that has a 1.6TD in it. I want to do a few of the mods to make it faster but I need to install some gauges.
Would I want to use an oil, head or water temp guage?
Where would I install the sending unit for a temp guage?
Where is the best place to tie in for a turbo boost guage?

Well I am assuming you have a factory water temp gauge already. When I know it's really nice to have something with some numbers on it but you can kinda keep an eye on your water temp already.
While Oil Temp is probably a good idea, adding an EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature) gauge seems to be advised more then adding other temp gauges.
and for your Boost Gauge, you want to T into the hose that goes from your Intake Manifold to the top of your Injection Pump.
Hope this helps.

Well I would go with a EGT gauge as mentioned above, second one would be an Oil Temp gauge then a boost gauge.

wouldn't you rather have oil pressure instead of oil temp? If you have the room for both gauges do it but in a space limited application ( such as a mk3) you kinda need to pick and choose the most beneficial gauges. I just figured oil pressure would be more important to monitor. Any thoughts?

I went with oil pressure over oil temperature. I also have water temp, pyrometer, volts, boost and engine hours.

My 1980 caddy did not come with any temp guage at all. It only has the temp warning light. That is what lead to my wife overheating the 1.6NA. The 'ole phone call "there is a red light on. What am I supposed to do?" Yeah that was the end of that motor. But hey it lead to me getting a 1.6TD so who is complaining?
So I assume that a water temp guage is what I would want. I also want to add an oil pressure guage, boost guage and a tach.
I would like to use VDO guages but I find they are quite a bit more then guages of other brands. Any thoughts on brands that you guys have found to work out pretty good?

The classic solution is to grab the set of three gauges that came with early Audis and the Volkswagen cabby... VDO temp, pressure and voltage. On eBay all the time, sensors already have the right metric threads, and they can be pretty inexpensive.... I've run these multiple times.
For example:

Where would you put the water temp guage sensor?

You might find a tapped and plugged hole already on one of the metal coolant flanges leading into or out of the head.
Or, find a later-model A1 coolant flange at a junkyard that already has the hole.
Or, it's a 10mm X 1 tap... can't remember the exact drill size !!
