Title: 1.6TD nominal oil temp
Post by: zagarus on July 22, 2007, 10:09:11 pm
just curious if anyone knows or has a link to info regarding operating temperatures for oil and possibly coolant.  Im just curious because my cars oil temp is running between 225-240F even when just cruising along on the highway boosting about 2psi at 110km/h.

normal driving   80°C
not normal driving (usual   ) 100°C

measured at oil filter

1.6td  k 24  @ 20PSI
109Hp @ 5400RPm

tip; in europe, the  mk1 gti (also scirocco)  has an very efficient oil cooler with an thermostate that opens at 95°C

also some 2.4 td vw/volvo engine have it

I am no expert, but I would assume you should switch them. It just makes more sense to me that way.

i think im going to tomorrow, but wouldnt you still say 115C at the head is pretty hot for oil?  isnt that like beyond safe temperatures?  or are all the measurements and specs for oil temperature taken at the oil filter flange?  i have no idea, i just assumed getting the oil temp reading from the head would be the best as it would tell me whats going on closer to the pistons and combustion.

My oil temp gauge is on the head and I get 130C some days if I'm really pushing hard... never ever seen more than that.  Usually it hovers around 110ish during *normal* driving

so my 95-115 is normal for a constant temp. I live in a hilly city so i know itll climb when i go up hills. The most ive seen it go was about 245-250F so like 117-120C.   So im in no danger then?

For conventional oil, I have heard that for every 10 degrees you go over 250, you cut it's life in half, so getting to 250 isn't doing your oil any favors. Synthetic withstands much higher temps, which is why I'm running it since my coolant gets as hot as your oil sometimes.

i also have a oil cooler on my car but i left the oem water/oil in place also.
should be best to delete the water/oil unit and just go with the air/oil unit?tlow temperature wise?
its a MKI gti oil cooler with an adapter plate with thermo from mocal.
