Title: VIP red hot muffler?
Post by: tdorval on July 17, 2007, 05:25:50 pm
Hi guys, i was wondering if its a no no to run the cheap VIP Red hot glass pack for a while to get me through until i can get a shop to do a 2.5" from the turbo back. My buddy had one on his and he said it brought his temps up a bit so he ditched it, not sure what to think tho. Also, what are you guys getting charged for a full  straight 2.5"? and are they making a downpipe for you too?
Thanks
TJ

Glass packs are junk. Within a few thousand miles they blow out the material or get packed with soot. Either way, they eventually end up as a straight pipe.

IF the car has a turbo, don't even bother wit a muffler. Just replace it with a piece of pipe the same size. You won't be sorry........

I'm currently running a temporary exhaust (see sig) until I can find the time to weld flanges/proper hangers and de-cat it. The glasspack is coming off today or tomorrow and just having the pipe dump it behind the axle.

This was how it sounded on day 1...

Add a resonator tip to that and it will be fine. I run two of those on my wife's quantum TD. It's pretty civil..

Title: exhaust

I would be very concerned, with exhaust entering the cabin.  Why not add a straight pipe to behind the rear wheels.

That's how I was running mine for a few weeks last march until it was warm enough to get under the car outside without freezing my hands off. Definitely not as bad as on a gasser, but it did need some windows down.
