Title: High Altitude, No Air, but Lots of Smoke (Pictures)

I went out west in my NA Diesel Jetta.  I noticed that whenever I got about about 4,000 ft, the car would smoke more easily.  My pump does not have the altitude compensation that most 89 Jettas do so it keeps adding fuel like it was at sea level.  At 700 ft elevattion where I live, my engine barely smokes, but at 5,000 ft it really smokes.  Here are some smokey pictures while I was going up Pikes Peak at about 10,000 ft.  I made it to the top (14,110 ft), but the last half was so steep, it was 1st gear only.  I tried second gear several times and I would lose speed.

Looks like my truck on the dyno at 1000 rpm. :lol:  I've lived in Colorado my whole life, but I've never been up Pikes Peak, though I have been up Mt Evans (highest paved road) many times. Bet you had trouble breathing also.

I also went up Mt. Evans and drove the Trail Ridge Rd at the Rocky National Park while we were out there.  Although the drive up Mt. Evans was not as steep as Pikes Peak.  I also saw some Audi/VW club going up Mt. Evans, we waved to each other.  I was a little winded on the last 130 ft hike to the top of Mt. Evans.  When I got in the car to head back down from Mt. Evans, the car took quite a bit of cranking to get it started.  It acted like my compression was bad.  I did get it started, but after that, I left the car running above 9,000 ft just to be safe, especially on Pikes Peak where it was 38 degrees F.

I thought that this Smoke Section ought to have some pictures.  Everyone has stories, but no pictures.
