Alas,......

where do you get a factory diesel tach at? and if not factory then where could i get a tach from that would work in my A1?
-
PM Trev0rbr, the one in the first link appears to be one of the few ones ever made, and may have only been a prototype
-
I'm pretty sure it must be a prototype, it has 0 miles and has never been installed, there are no marks on the electrical connectors or any evidence of installation on the plastic tabs (screw marks).

isn't that just a converted gasser cluster?
-
The one in that pic is indeed gas
-
I don't know why VW didn't put a tach in everything. Who needs a stupid clock!

true dat, plus to make a production run all the same seems like it would be cheaper anyway

The whole point of creating a prototype is to test the product in the real world in order to see how it stands up :testing means use and wear. As well, one of the other pics at this guys` site illustates a part number and why would you issue a part number to something that`s a one-off or two-off? What we probably have here is an example of a rare OEM istem that was sitting in someones` part stock unsold. And, given that it was @$200 in 1981(in addition to the cost of insallation), I imagine that there`s not many of them around, which would account for the rarity,...

the pics are from my site, and there is no factory vw style part # on this cluster, only production dates..
I can reference all #'s against the etka and see what there is there.

You might want the check with anyone in South Africa VW as the tach is still an option in that market and fairly common in the bone yards there,..

I'm asking someone in Cape Town right now....

Check with Ron at Rons parts: his outfit is based in SA,..

I didn't get a response, he may have just been signed into MSN

What I find curious is that the tach goes to 7K rpm, which diesels can't even approach. It would seem to me to be a gas tach put into a diesel cluster.
Or something else even stranger....

that one pictured appears to be just a gasser cluster modified to work off diesel signal, with a glow plug light put in to top it off. fairly common and easy to do. the factory mkI diesel tach (http://oak.cats.ohiou.edu/~mw105397/mk1cluster/00086.jpg)is what's interesting.........
-
Trev0rbr's is a gasser version modded to work with a diesel, hence the 7k "unleaded only".
-
yeah the picture i put up is one i made, i didn't like that one since it had the gasser speedo, but thats what the guy wanted me to do so i did it.
-
BlackTieTD, what MK1 came factory with a diesel tach? That is what i would like to get my hands on. I will have to look around a couple salvage yards for one now!!

Waste of time IMO. The one pictured is the ONLY one I have ever seen and as mentioned it appears to be a one off
-
i have to agree

Highly unlikly, given that the wiring diagrams in the A1 diesel Bentley illustrate a tach:why would they do that if it was a one-off?
-
i'd like to have the factory diesel tach and the gas speedometer (i hate 85mph max speedo)
the 7k tach would be fine, just re-face it... the diesel CAN go to 5k+... most cars that redline between 6-7 their tachs often go up to 8k not too much of a difference
-
yeah especially if you plan to do any kind of governor mod i would let the gasser rev range on the tach, that lets u rev to like 6k doesn't it? so u only have an extra 1000 rpms. and yeah i definetly like putting the gti speed in the diesel housings. i love the 120 speedo in my jetta, it was cool finding out how fast i was going past 85 haha.
-
Yep... I did the gasser conversion as well. I used the Dakota Digital converter / alt terminal mod then used a sharpie to "lower" the redline.
Isn't the scale / orientation the same on the OEM one as the gasser tach? Looks like they just left off the last few units. I'd imagine you could make the gasser tachlook the same as the "OEM" one in the pic with some careful paint touch-up work.
