During the course of my rebuild, the machine shop stated that the bearings on the intermediate shaft should be replaced. I called to get some from VW and they said VW don't list them. Kinda weird---make the engine, but don't sell the parts for it. :?

sometime's it is actually cheaper just to out source some of the work :)

I had to have my bearings custom made at a machine shop for my 1.6TD. Cost about $75 to have them made and fitted. The ones that came out were shot and there were chunks all in the oil pan so I had no choice.

Does the AAZ and 1.6 engine use the same intermediate shaft bearing?

You can try Haseldens, but they will tell you what Lightcliffe told me this morning after a phone call to VW technical, you can't buy them separatley.
Mike_W I think, he sent me some recently from the states, with the dollar being on it's arse it wasn't that expensive.
If you need tools to do them, and your only in South Yorkshire, bring your block over to Huddersfield and you can use my instal-remove tool I just had made the other day.

I stand corrected, they are not available.
Simon, I work at Hayseldens!

I can get you new int shaft bearings if you are having trouble. I need to look in the etka and see if they are the same between 1.6 and 1.9 but I'd almost bet on it.
hit me with a pm or email if you are interested

You can get dual plated Durabond bearings for less $20 a set.
-
Dave, that sounds like a steal!
I'd follow Dave's advice, my stuff has to come through the border too so it's slow and costly to ship.
-
Dura-bond bearings are made in the states, off the top of my head I think the ones you guys want are cam bearing set NO. VWG-1
-
Thanks guys. The machine shop did a great job.
