Title: A2 Jetta final drive ratios
Post by: rwthomas1 on January 18, 2005, 07:03:56 pm
Hello,
I am looking to swap a rebuilt TD engine into my wifes 89 1.6NA Jetta.  What I would like to know is are the TD transaxle ring&pinion ratios different from the NA ratios?  If so how much and is it necessary to swap gears or transaxles?  Where do I look to know what I have?  Thanks, RT

what sort of transmission do you have?  The number you are looking for is stamped on the bottom of the bellhousing.  It is probably covered in grease and oil so bring a cloth out when you go to check it.  Just looking at the information I have here it will probably be an AGS (86-90 1.6 diesel).

D'oh!  Its a 5speed.  Will check the tranny code when she gets home from work.  I just assumed you all would know its a 5speed.  Can't imagine what a pig it would be with an auto....  RT

The AGS is a five speed.  I assumed that it would not be an auto.  There aren't too many of them around anymore.
