Title: Compound turbo question
Post by: rallydiesel on June 20, 2007, 02:41:29 pm
Anybody know how these work?

Air goes into big turbo and then into intake of small turbo, right? Is the exhaust set up the same with the turbines in series? Do both turbos have their own wastegates? I would imagine this would shorten the lifespan of both turbos?

Exhaust goes into the small turbo exhaust side...then out to exhaust.
Small cold side goes to Large turbo hotside...
Large turbo hotside goes to intake.

That is the simple way.

there are more complex ways with valves and stuff between the exhausts but the way I described is a COMPOUND setup

I don’t believe that's correct.

Hot gases (exhaust) into small turbo hot side, out of there to hot side of large turbo, then to exhaust.
Cold side of large turbo goes to inlet of small turbo and outlet on small turbo to engine.
