Title: Leaking and Loose around dipstick 1.6 Diesel N/A
Post by: mtnbob on June 19, 2007, 07:57:40 am
Leaking and loose around where the dipstick attaches to the engine. Is there a gasket that goes bad there? Seems that it might be my oil leakage issue area. 1986 Golf 1.6 diesel N/A

Isn't that real close to the oil filter mount? Maybe the filter is a bit loose or the filter gasket is not doing its job.

Yeah, there`s a little rubber donut that seals the tube against the block. Sounds like yours is old and stretched: when you install the new one, put a drop of oil on it to make sure it slides in the hole without binding.

Yes, quite possibly it was the oil filter also but the dipstick is also very loose and leaking. I have been advised to clean the dipstick and area that it inserts into, and apply a bead of high temp silicone around the dipstick tube, install it back in, and smooth the silicone down over the area. I'm then told to let it sit 24 hours. oh and I am using mann oil filters now instead of the garbage one that I originally put on there. Hopefully that will help. 8)

I used the silicon method when this happened to me. I think I left the old o-ring in there as well

cool, was wondering if anyone else had tried this. do you think that significant amounts of oil could leak out of this area if it was very loose?

Title: oil dipstick tube leak
Post by: vwwv on July 30, 2007, 03:02:42 pm
I was recently "messin" with replacing a coolant hose on my 1.6 NA and I thought it would be easier if I removed the dipstick tube to access the lower hose clamp.  BAD IDEA.  It bolts to the lower IP body and to remove it one has to slightly bend the tube.  Getting it to bolt back onto the pump was an ordeal and it leaked where it entered the block.  I replaced the O ring and the metal washer to no avail.  I ended up doing the silicone.   Still not leaking after 3 months.

EDIT:  I failed to mention that the silicone use was at the suggestion of BurnYourMoney.  My thanks to him.
