Title: Add a tach to 84 Jetta TD?
Post by: sethyboy85 on January 15, 2005, 08:32:23 am
I would like to know if I could just find a gauge cluster from an 84 or whatever other year would fit with a tach and just simply drop it in my 84 Jetta TD?

I know I was able to do this with our 89 Plymouth Voyager 2.5l factory Turbo'd, went to junk yard found cluster from same year and dropped it in everything worked...

could I be just as lucky with my 84 jetta?

Don't know if the wiring's all there or not, but I'm sure I have a cluster from and 84 Jetta gl TD that I think has a tach! See if there's a single lead on your alternator (yellow wire maybe?) that has a spade connector. That would be the "w" terminal that runs the tach.

Or there is this (http://vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=76&highlight=tach+install) thread that will get you going if you don't have the "w" connector.

I would ask member here Caddy to look in Europe if the GTD had a tach.

Maybe you could get lucky...

If it's a five speed, it's an 020 trans, but there's a whack of different ones. My 84 Jetta's both came with 7A's, it's on the tag in the trunk. Look on the flat boss on the bottom of the bellhousing though. If it's ever been changed, it may not be the code listed in the trunk.

Then have a look around here, do a search and you'll find a couple of charts telling you what the ratios are forthe trans you've got.

If AND I MEAN IF!  it's a diesel that hasn't been touched, just rev unti it won't rev anymore, because the governor will cut the fuel long before you can hurt the engine.

7A in my 84 gasser, 80 k in 2nd, 120k in third, red lines on the speedo for shifting. Haven't figured it out, but it sounds like an awful lot of revs to me!360,000 and hasn't broke yet!

I take it pretty much to the red dashes (maximum performance) shift speeds on the speedo... if that is what they are, every other car has had those little ones for "fuel economy" and bigger/yellow/red for max performance.

It doesn't pull above 40mph in 2nd much so that is where I shift- when acceleration is needed and so on for the other gears, except 4th didn't shift out of 4th at 85mph yet though... lol :D

its 20 in first 40 in second like 57 in 3rd, 79 in 4th, and no redline on the speedo for 5th.....

i have taken mine just over 80 too and it didnt doo anything, but the govenor does kick in at 20mph in 1st.

dont rev it that high all the time though, its bad for em....

i've read before that those are reccomended shift marks, no they are redline marks.
