Title: Im kicking my own ass...
Post by: Kudagra on June 04, 2007, 06:05:56 pm
So I almost have my short block all done for the jetta. Everything but rods/pistons. Had the block bored out, installed main studs, cleaned up all the flashing inside and had aux bearings installed. I had the crank, bearings, front and rear seals and the aux shaft installed. I just finished lapping the valves and installing the CRANE springs and new lifters. I was looking for my custom ground cam and decided to check the fit of the 1.9 steel headgasket.

WTF?....one port doesnt line up..LIKE a MECHANICAL LIFTER block.

DOH!...I had all my machine work done on the wrong block.

SO now I have to get my HYDRAULIC block (the other one) worked over and transfer everything over.

I just assumed that the block in the car(86...1st year of Hydraulic) was the hydraulic block...it wasnt..obviously.

Atleast one guy down at Vee village (local place here) wanted my other block...Ill see if I can trade him my machined block for all the work I need for my other block.

You know, there was a thread started on "what was your worst screw up". It does suck big time.

Yea thats a pretty good one.

Atleast I didnt sell my other block like I was going to a few months ago.

It goes with the "Check the fuses first if its an electrical problem" kind of thing. If you have a hydraulic head...make sure you have a Hydraulic  block.

Well I just talked to the guy at the local VW place. Im going to trade the mechanical block that is done for the machine work on the hydraulic block. Joy.

Now I have to remove all my main studs and bearings. I hope that loctite didnt harden up too much.

OUCH! That sucks man.

Good thing you hung on to that extra block and at least you have a deal to get the work done on trade.

We're all entitled to screw ups like that.

actually I said "Aww crap" Then I put my tools down right where I was at, turned off the light and went upstairs.

Just dropped the Hydro block off at the shop..along with the machined solid block, crank and manifolds.

While its there Ill probably get my piston tops done and have my bearings coated.

What are you doing to the piston tops?
How are you modding your bearings?

Just get a hightemp coating on the tops of the pistons and they showed me some bearings that a local racer uses in his aircooled vws. Its like a teflon coating. I guess this guy has all his engines done there and the last one ran out of oil for a few laps. When it was torn down it was still spotless.
