I want to use a good oil filter for my diesel with the correct by-pass valve pressure (30 psi?). I have never used Fram, but I have used STP, MicroGard, or Purolator in the past and I know these are not the greatest. Which oil filter is the best one, MANN or WIX? Or is there a better one? I've heard MANN is OEM and WIX is a pretty filter.

I like Mobil 1 and K&N filters the most. They are both pretty much the same, and even made by the same company. After that Mann filters are pretty damn good.

Sorry, I forgot about the Bosch filters. I like them as well. I got board at my last job and cut up a Fram, STP, Bosch, and Mobil 1 filters. I was pretty impressed with all but the Fram and STP. I will never use one of those crap things again.
The Bosch and Mobil 1 filters both had a good thick can, nice flange and good threads.
The only reason I still vouch for the Mobil 1 and K&N filters over the Bosch is from some of the papers I have read. None of them say anything bad about the Bosch filter, but they do say great things about the Mobil/K&N ones.

German cars should use german parts IMO.

i recently spoke with an old diesel veteran who studied bosch inj pumps in germany when the VW diesel was just emerging. he's been working on them and diesel engines in merc and vw ever since. has a shop down the street from my house now. rebuilds and maintains IDI diesels. dude loves the 1.6TD.
he told me that mann is the way to go and that up until recently, bosch was just as good. however, he says the bosch ones are no longer made in germany? or something about how they are made differently now and are no longer the same as the 'old bosch' filters. so he's switched to mann only now. if you get a new bosch filter check to see if its actually made in germany. i'd be interested to know..
(he also mentioned that running a fram is like running no oil filter for what thats worth)
i trust his experience since he's seen the effects of poor filter use for the past ~30 years as he's rebuilt the victim engines.

You are right. The bosch filters I currently have are made in the U.S.
Looks like someone is switching to Mann soon! :lol:

In the U.K its Mann,Mahle or kengst for me,yes fram are crap,made in the uk,ive cut them up too,not impressed,ive imported mobil1 oil filters for my mk1 petrol and they look good,
genuine vw filters are not made in germany anymore,the ones i was getting were made in brasil if i remember right, so i dont buy them anymore,

I use either gen VW or Mann at the garage.
No problems with them, but to be fair I have very few problems with oil filters in general.
The only filters I have had problems with are Fram, and I cannot remember what it was but i do know never to use them again!

My Grandpa (previous owner to my mk2 jetta 1.6td)... was big on diesels...he would go to the local heavy duty diesel truck shops and he had baldwin filters on his 6 cyl cummins TD and one on the jetta

Where would you get a mann or bosch. I get STP because its easy to find and i bought a fram with no threads so that was the end of fram.

Do you lot get "Hengst" or "Kneckt" filters? these are sold here by one of the main VW Audi parts places, they don't seem bad either.
If you are short of filters I have a sensible suppy of OEM and Mann filters on the shelf.

i'm all about wix, they are the best, fram is absolute crap. no filter is better than a fram. and i would definetly say that wix are better than mann too, looking at the 2 side by side the wix has more holes on top to flow more oil, and it just looks like a better quality. incase anyone doesn't know, wix are also sold by napa as their napa gold filters. the premium ones. i don't know who makes the silver line, aka the ***ty ones.

FYI Amsoil EA oil filters are available for our cars.
i'm quite interested in the amsoil EA filters... supposedly they're very efficient and take out more crap from the oil than any other full flow filter...

Took me a little while to find this thread, but sounds pretty good.
As informational, I just completed particle count testing of my engine oil for both an OEM Toyota filter and Amsoil AeO oil filter: same vehicle, 1550 miles each filter, 160,000 miles total on the vehicle. The results were astounding, especially for a hard core NON Amsoil person with Mobil stamped on my forehead: however, the numbers are simply phenomenal.....

>14 microns 168 particles/ml 12 particles/ml
>25 microns 34 particles/ml 2 particles/ml

The OEM yielded an ISO cleanliness of 18/17/15 (good), while the Amsoil EaO filter returned an ISO cleanliness of 14/13/11 (Pristine!). As a lube engineer, one is most pleased in reducing ISO codes one or two levels. One ISO code reduction cuts abrasive particles in half. A reduction of 4 is, well, superb... Over a 93% reduction in abrasive oil contaminants by just changing the full flow oil filter.
Thus my used engine oil for my Toyota Sequoia is actually *cleaner than the oil I put in the engine out of the quart bottle!* Rather an outstanding achievement and quite a statement....
The problem is: no EaO filter currently available for the TDI.. Cards and letters to Amsoil I think would be in order... Amsoil dealers, please weigh in.

It is suppossed to work just great. Just wondering.

WIX states that its oil filters filter down to 10-12 micron. But on the 51191 oil filter page, it says Nominal Micron Rating is 25. As far as the others, I have no idea.

just need to make sure i can buy them here, and not have to pay stupid customs charges for having them shipped over...
around $20 for a filter that lasts approx 25'000km is a damn good deal if you ask me!!!
