Title: 66 aircooled diesel swap?
Post by: SMOKEYDUB on June 04, 2007, 03:11:11 pm
My buddy just blew his engine in his 66 dune buggy and I am wondering if there is and adapter plates made so you can mate a 1.9 AAZ to the old bug transmission. If not were do i get a decent rebuild kit ? can i get performance camshafts? How well do the respond to porting and polishing and dual carbs? any info on some air cooled stuff would be cool.

Thanks...

Jeff

i think someone makes one, i've seen alot of watercooled engines in the back of air cooled cars.  especially 8vs, and a 1.9 really is no different from any other 8v

I might be thinking of something else but doesn't the engine spin CCW in an aircooled?

Kennedy Engineering (http://www.kennedyeng.com/vw_por.htm) makes a VW water cooled Diesel to VW Aircooled tranny adapter and pressure plate.

I used to have a link to a page where someone had put a 1.9L TD into an air cooled bug, I can't find it now.

This site has some H2O cooled swap info in it's forums though. http://www.germanlook.com

There have been lots of H2O engine swaps done for aircooleds though, have a look at around germanlook.com. Super Beetles seem to lend themselves better to water cooled swaps as the front strut setup leaves more room for cooling.

On a dune buggy you might be squeezed for good cooling room unless he's got a sand rail, then the world is your oyster.

The Kennedy site lists a large group of engines they have adapters for and then says:

"All these engines rotate the correct direction except some 4 cylinder Honda and Corvair engines"

Tyler I hope you were thinking about a Corvair as opposed to a Honda... ewwwww !!

I have to stop looking at germanlook.com, it's making me want an aircooled with Porsche drive train, suspension, brakes, and wheels..

oh wait... a Type I with Porsche suspension, brakes, and wheels and a TDI-M FTW!!!!

Doesn't matter. Just change the r&p to the other side of the case, and you're good to go.

Probably the Corvair, who's engine does run CCW.

Here you go.... I went through some old links I saved from a couple years back.

Jackpot!!!  More than you'd ever want to know....
Volks-Swap Watercooled VW to Aircooled VW forum (http://bb.bbboy.net/vwengineconversions-viewforum?forum=14)
Shoptalk Forums "Conversion Perversions" (http://www.shoptalkforums.com/viewforum.php?f=19)
Anyone up for a Aluminum Block 1.2 TDI into an air cooled bug swap????  :D
