Hey all,
First things first: this forum has been invaluable to me. Thanks to everyone for all the great everything.
PROBLEM: Tapping noise coming from motor after startup, persists for several minutes and goes away.
ASSUMED: To be the hydraulic lifters, as the timing is spot-on. The local VW mechanic said that the fluid is likely draining away while she's parked.
SOLUTION: The mech. said that there is some special fluid to run before my next oil change, and he's seen that help quite often. However, this doesn't sound like a real fix.
IDEAS?: Is this problem potentially disastrous in any way, or shall I run the oil additive and let it persist?
Thanks in Advance,
GratefulJoe

How many km`s on the engine?
If` it`s over 100k, just pop in a new set and 36mm oil pump. It`s a cheap uprade and, with the temps here in Winnipeg run as low as -40C, it eliminates the noise for another 100k.
-
Yes, as you're probably aware, it gets RIGHT-FREAKIN-COLD here in e-town as well.
So...install new lifters and swap in a bigger oil pump.
-Where would I find such an oil pump
-Is the lifter install difficult?
Thanks,
GratefulJoe

I have that pump part # on an invoice but I`m at work:get it to you Monday?
-
That would be just great. Thank you.

Do a search here for "36mm oil pump" and you should find the exact part #.
I'm in Edmonton as well and couldn't find it locally anywhere near as cheap as from these guys:

Glad to see another Edmontonian in the mix !!

I have at least one Ticky lifter in my 03, I thought about running some Seafoam (http://www.seafoamsales.com/motorTuneUp.htm) through at the next oil change as I've read on the tex that it can cleanup hydraulic lifters. NAPA stocks it.
Might be worth a try.
I just turned 200,000 miles and my Timing belt is due in another 16K, I'll probably just put new lifters in when I do the belt instead, the perfect time to do it.

Thanks for all the help guys. I think I'll just install some new ones when I do my timing belt, which will be very soon.
Vince, do you have any experience in setting timing, and would you be willing to help for a case of beer?
Cheers,
Joey

Sure.... have dial gauge/locking plate/locking pin/pulley puller will travel.... allergic to beer but good coffee will do just fine !
