Title: jammed boot (trunk) lock
Post by: rubadubdub on May 30, 2007, 07:10:50 am
The lock on my boot has jammed and i cant get the key in to unlock it.

From the look of the dents in it I think someone tried to break in with a screw driver but only succeeded in knackering the lock.

Does anyone know how to replace the lock with the boot closed as i cant get at any of the bolts from the inside. Im assuming i'll have to drill it out, but i want to make sure i dont wreck the housing in the process.

If anyone can let me know the best way to go about this i'd be vey grateful as the Bentley manual doesnt cover damage caused by mindless vandals!

Just a guess as I only own a VW engine, not a car. Remove rear seat, climb in boot and remove clips holding lock in place. I had to do this in a Cougar once.

i think the back seat has a support welded in, but maybe you could get at it with a longg combination of extensions?

It's a Golf, so you should be able to fold the back seat down and get in the hatch and remove some trim pieces to access your latch and pop the lock and open the boot.

I had a similar problem with my MkIII Jetta and I had to crawl into the trunk to release it. Pain in the a$$, but not impossible.

BlackTie, I was lucky in that my rear seat folds (but not flat). Seeing as I am not the smallest person on the face of the earth, it was a challenge. My dear wife helped by standing outside and laughing.

cheers for the replies guys, i got it open and the lock out.

I'd already tried flattening the seats and using brute force to prize it open with a screwdriver. Never realised you could push the retaining clip back. Didnt even need to remove any trim, although i did later to unsrew the lock from the housing. Very much a case of too much braun and too little brains!

And just in case i wasnt feeling stupid enough already, a gang of kids watched me fumbling around and started taking the mickey out of me for looking like i was living in the boot of my car!

Why didn't you grab one of those kids,
who were standing about laughing at you,
throw them in the back of the Golf, and
tell them you're not going to let them out
'til they open the hatch, for you.

Of course, you'll have to run like hell when
the big bruiser of a Dad, that the kid called
  on his cell, comes along.
