Title: Suzuki TD conversion
Post by: caddywompus on January 05, 2005, 10:27:12 am
A few weeks ago I did a Suzuki 1.6 TD conversion in my shop and was fortunate to have a skilled photographer (and wrench wielder) there as well.

The donor motor was a 1.6 ECO (*1V) that we retrofitted with a TD Injection Pump/intake manifold.  It was completely rebuilt before installation and had 1mm oversized pistons (77.48mm).

Check out the pics here: http://www.riverclan.org/photo-ops/biozuk

What tranny does the swap use, stock vw just mounted longitudinally?
Or does she bolt to the suzuki one?

I am interested in how she hooks up to the drivetrain!

Wicked looking engine by the way!
:D

My buddy painted his (edit) "VW1.9TD" (end edit) Nissan diesel blue. eck.

How about Caterpillar yellow! hehe. For me, paint is too bling bling.

Caddy's is mounted to the Suzuki trans. There is a kit for the Samurai trannie, the Suzuki Sidekick too, and there is now one for the Toyota transmissions.

SWEET

I bought an 87 samurai longbody that I'd like to convert, but the kits are a bit spendy for my taste.

Yup, we used the Suzuki transmission with an ACME adapter kit.  Overall the conversion including the cost to rebuilt the engine with new pistons totaled out at over $3000.  The kit is pretty slick and worth the money (~$1200) but definately could be slicker.

If I could find Detroit Diesel Green I would make the switch.  Perhaps we can pick some up next week...

Yes, ACME has Sidekick adapters.

The tracks are a one-of-a-kind, one-time build I bought off a guy on Ebay.
Mattracks will sell you a set, but they will set you back about 15 grand (or more). The guy isn't building more. There are a few others built by a maverick builder in Maine, but Mattracks then threatened lawsuits......
Maybe the Mattracks patent is ending.......there are a couple kinds ATV tracks you can buy now, besides Mattracks' Lightfoot. Or, if you are handy, you could build a set. The snowmobile tracks would be about two grand - then you just need some steel, some little wheels... it's easy

edit: This turned into a thread hijack :D We should start a new one, or I could send you to a half dozen BBS's where I blah blah about ME! and my tracks in past threads.

Mud
You didn't hijack this thread. It's about Samurai conversions, not paint color. LOL

You guys worried about engine block color should just close the hood and drive.  :D LOL!

Actually I painted my Jetta TD gold color to match the car color, I'm so ashamed.
