When driving along, when I turn the wheel even a little to the left, i hear a wierd noise comming out what seems to be the passenger side wheel area...
I have checked the wheel bearings on both sides
what the hell could it be?
maybe the brakes dragging???
I could swear that sometimes I feel it in my brakes??
Would brakes do that?
I may rebuild them tomorrow just for the hell of it?
But I would rather not if thats not it!

Wait, can the wheelbearing be worn without actually having side to side movement as we are used to seeing in really bad cases?

if you have power steering it could be the pump making noise?

Nah, its more of a grinding, definately not an accessory or pulley!

Sounds like a CV joint going south to me. Time to get yourself a new driveshaft (probably easier than trying to replace just the CV joint.

just enough to turn the wheel a bit
put some sideways pressure on it

I'm voting for a front wheel bearing. The race gets a few pits in it and makes a helluva noise. This will go on for a few thousand km before you will detect any noticable play.
I had an outer CV joint go south on my A3. It was more of a rythmic knocking, once per revolution of the wheel. Wheel bearings make a low growl that increases in frequency with wheel speed and gets louder when the "bad" wheel is under load. Wheel bearing noise kinda sneaks up on you over time, you don't really notice how loud it has become. After you get it fixed you won't believe how quiet the car is.

To check wheel bearing play you grab the wheel (top and bottom) and move it up and down. Side to side is for tie rods. Wheel bearings usually make a howling noise when you put a load on them when your driving i.e. turning the wheel a little bit. By turning the steering wheel left a little bit it puts load on the right wheel bearing so that is probably your answer right there. Wheel bearings are cheap at 33 Dollars.

yea i had to replace a wheel bearing on my golf. The slightest turn made it have this vibrating noise (turning left only, right side bearing) Once you know the sound... you won't forget it (or the price to fix it hehe)

Now that I've replaced my AWY with an AGS I can hear a wheel bearing going bad at highways speeds. Anywbody know what the wheel bearing kits include? They are double the price of the bearings so surely they must include more than a couple circlips. :?:
