i had a connecting rod bearing go and got bad quick witch took out the crank, rods and, some pistons . the block is in great shape but if the price is right on a short block assembly i'd probably be interested

also if anyone knows where i can get the p100 rods in the US i'd be thankful for any information

i think your ok! you can use 1.6 n/a rods and crank they are the same as TD the difference was in the pistons were made stronger and cut outs for the under piston oil squirters and better materials used in the head to handle the heat and extra air induction thanks Duane

Just throwing that out there... now VW probably started using the same TD crankshaft for both TD and N/A, but I am not sure of when... possibly the same time they introduced the Hydraulic lifter head???

alot of guys at my shop keep telling me have the crank welded up and turned back down to spec

i have a gut feeling this is not really the correct way to do it
any opinions????

IMO it's not a very good idea. It may be ok for a gasser but I wouldn't try on a diesel. Cranks can be found for cheap anyway.

the crank can be repaired but it has to be done properly ! the crank in my gas turbo truck has been welded on to make it a stroker crank it's now a 1.9 liter it's been reground and polished and balanced and knife cut ! that was done in '85 and it's held up all this time ! i have ran it hard out at the drag strip a few times and never thought twice about it ! so i say go for the repair!!
 and also did anyone know that TD injection lines have a larger I.D and longer in length then N/A diesel injector lines?   Duane

I hear the crank from a 1.8 16V is the same thing.
 Maybe you can find one of those locally.

yea there should be no problem with getting it done properly.

hmmmm vw is smart if they used their TD crank with a 16V gasser.  saves on fabricating two different types of cranks for two different engines.... much cheaper in the long run with less over-produced parts that will never sell.  plus the TD cranks are very strong!
