does the idi engine have a idle regulator valve on it? ive got the 1.9td mk3 golf....
-
which year?
-
its a 1996 (p registration) aaz 1.9 td mark3 golf
-
it might have some sort of a/c idle boost...
-
the car don't have a/c.
the msin reason i ask is because my idle is so rough, i have to keep the rev up over 2k just to stop it from stalling
-
Does your pump have one of these:

We're pretty sure that's an idle booster for A/C equipped cars.
-
my injector pump, don't have that on it mate

here's a picture

OK, thanks for the picture... 99.999% sure you don't have an idle regulator, unless there's some novel mystery device buried on the other side of the pump !
Based on your other posting it sounds like you're trying to fix a low/rough idle problem... could be clogged/worn injectors, could be a misbehaving injection pump, could be really poor timing or fuel system (how's the power otherwise ??) Can you see any air bubbles in that tiny piece of clearish tubing (the elbow bend) that leads into the pump ? Actually on second look maybe it's not clear at that point... is there a clear section somewhere ?
What to do next depends on what tools you have: the two easy ones are (a) removing the injectors and having them tested (15mm wrench and a 27mm deep dish socket) or (b) check the timing (cam lock, dial gauge and adapter, new valve cover gasket etc)
-
You might have a idle speed adjusting lever on the other side of the pump it is (I think) the lever above the cold start lever on the pump.
But does that explain your rough idle? I doubt it.... but you can try timing the pump with the idle speed and cold start in the home place.

(15mm wrench and a 27mm deep dish socket)
Isn't it 17mm? You are refering to the hard injector lines right?
-
:( yeah its a 17mm dude and a 27mm injector socket...

progress so far guys, hopethis solves the problem.... cost me a fair bit to £££$$$
(http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i206/mansvw/DSC05958.jpg)
these are the old set of injectors
(http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i206/mansvw/DSC05968.jpg)
new replacements :)
new glow plugs, the one on the right is the old one but the replacement that i picked up on the left is the wrong shape and size :? , that's another trip to the shops tomorrow.
What do you guys think, should this solve the problems that im having? i also removed the timing belt cover and all looks fine under there, if i wanted to do a quick check to see if the belt had jumped a tooth, how would i go about doing this?
-
turn the engine to TDC and look at the end of the cam to make sure it is level with the head. I'm not sure how to check the pump on your engine though
-
AAZ has a pin that goes through the sprocket, just like a 1.6
-
jimfoo - "what does the pin indicate, and what should i be looking for? any pics?"
burn_your_money - "Ill give that a go, makes sense.. i could do that tonight"
-
it would be pretty easy to tell if the pin won't fit.
there is a hole for the injection pump locking tool. it slides right through the sprocket. if it's off by a bit (can't stick something clear through) then it skipped a tooth somehow.

I forgot the exact size, but a big metric bolt is about the same size, 10mm maybe?

-PROGRESS SO FAR-
Got around to installing the injectors and glow plugs... tooks a couple of hours (had a few problems with the tight fitting of the glow plugs behind the pump).
all done tho, but you wouldn't guess-still giving me idle problems on start... it looks as if im goin to have to check the timimng...
so what is the procedure?
set, turn the engine to TDC, and then fit the injector pin?
-
and don't forget the camshaft locking plate... you don't want the camshaft moving :)
once that's locked loosen the camshaft sprocket. that will enable the pulley to turn a little bit for the timing.
