Do any of the TDI engined cars have gearboxes that allow 100km/h in second gear or is it always a change to third as well?

sure, you can go 100 in second, all you need is an engine that will spin to about 8000 rpm

My '97 TDI cruises in 5th gear: 2750 rpm = 120kmh

4000 rpm in 2nd will get you to about 70kmh

Not 8000 but 6000rpm. I saw a video of one taking 5500rpm very easily  8)
