Title: So it's true... VW switching from PD to common rail...
Post by: jtanguay on May 09, 2007, 03:02:52 am
Hmmm it's like taking two steps forward, and 4 steps back... all because of some particulate filter...

If the emissions system ever imposes a problem for long-term performance, then we can install an electric exhaust cutout valve to dump exhaust. The stock exhaust system won't be blocked out (just reduced flow) to keep the sensors happy. Wire the exhaust dump to WOT pedal or 80+% pedal input (depends on performance vs. throttle mapping), or to a dashboard manual switch (or both).

A decent looking electric cutout valve with a manual rocker switch can be found for $100-120 USD if I remember correctly. Welding not included.

The catalytic converter might however be placed very close to the turbo like the current MKV PDs, potentially making exhaust valve placement difficult.

Anyway, the CR would be a cool swap motor for car projects.

That article is a year & a half old. I would think there is more reliable information on what VW is bringing when they bring back their diesels.

true that the article is old... i just hope that VW continues research on PD technology...

CR technology is advancing pretty good too...  but i rather the idea of a single unit injector like way back when...

I have read that VW took PD motors as far as they could afford and then scrapped the idea and paid Bosch for common rail rights...The PD will not meet future emmission tiers coming and VW has no more ideas on how to meet them so they are giving up and paying Bosch to continue.
