Title: Automatic Quantum TD timing marks
Post by: veeman on May 02, 2007, 09:23:28 pm
I'm looking at getting an 83 Quantum TD with an auto transmission (mainly for the engine).  It's currently non-running and I'm trying to get it going.  It's puffing smoke from the intake and turning over very "strangely", so I suspect it's massively out of time.

Can anyone tell me what the TDC mark looks like on the auto-trans flywheel/flex plate?  Seems like there's a hole and also a ridge.  Can't seem to figure it out.  Does anyone have the Bentley or first hand experience?  Will I have to resort to wire down the #1 injector hole?

Thanks in advance...

it's when piston 1 reaches the top of its travel right?  hmmm would be nice if you didn't have to pull the injector...

Nevermind... I found the mark.  I removed the #1 injector an put a tig wire in the hole by the glow plug then rotated the engine until the wire stopped moving.  I thought that wouldn't have been possible because of the pre-cups, but it worked.

The mark on the flex plate is a horizontal line with a zero next to it... The corrosion / grime on there hid it from me pretty well.
