Title: Muffler Questions
Post by: dieselabstimmen on April 23, 2007, 08:02:07 pm
If I make my own exhaust system with performance downpipe, hi-flo cat converter, and high flow muffler for my mk3 1.9td, what sort of performance gain may I expect?  Also, with the stock mufflers gone, what does the vehicle sound like? :?

where do you live? some places regard turbo's as sound muffling devices   but the mk3 1.9TD's that came with a CAT stock, will require a cat :(

pretty big performance gain can be had... better spooling.. lower egt..  on a diesel you don't need back pressure like on a gasser.

im running 2.5" cat back straight pip, no muffer in my 97 aaz jetta

i havent noticed any power increase, and the noise in not noticable at all, it really sounds no different than stock

only thing is that the turbo spins more freely and sounds better, more noticable...

I was running a 1.6TD with just the downpipe, it wasn't loud at all. It sounded like it was under water though, which was weird. I'll probably just straight pipe my car when that day comes

The big exhauste allows you to didle with the fuel and get more power.  If all you do is put on a big pipe, you will see little or no gain.

i have a 93 1.9td aaz with k14 turbo, and turbo back 2.5" straight pipe, it sounds like a f350 diesel.  very beefy, i'll get some video when i get my car back next week...

with just straight pipe, no down pipe, it didn't sound different, the key here is the 2.5" downpipe, the stock is very restrictive.  I got more top end power too.  www.jsperformance.com

I built my Audi 2.5" pipe with one straght-through muffler. Pic. (http://fatali.servebeer.com/~mrcrossfire/Audi/pakoputki.jpg)
The downpipe is 60mm stainless, made by the owner before me. Sound is not bad at all. I recommend to turn the exhaust tip downwards. If you don't like to wash your car every day. :)
