SOLD
I have a rebuilt 1.6TD motor with everything but the oil feed line. The motor machine work was done professionally as well the motor assembly. A well known race shop did the assembly with ARP head studs, rod bolts, etc. Motor has thickest headgasket to lower compression. The head may have a 3-5 angle valve job, but I can't remember if that happened or not. Currently the motor is attached via a Clutchmasters 4 puck solid center clutch to a 5 speed diesel trans that shift smoothly and works nicely.
Motor has less than 10 miles on it since rebuild. New rings have not even had a chance to seal. Need to sell since I am moving to CA.

I beleive the engine is in Burlington VT, here is the OG post

Just bring it with you and make a stop in Utah where I can pick it up from ya.
I'll be the cash would cover your fuel to get ya to CA.

Points of note are the k14 turbo, earlier style intake manifold, early style pump bracket (and engine mount) and the non-turbo pump. What's the engine code? Enough doesn't jive to make me uninterested...
Andrew
Your uninterest have anything to do with the fact it looks like its over 20 years old?
-
lack of oil cooler too... i bet this motor was just turbo'd but is really supposed to be n/a
-
ECO diesel?
-
The pump was from an N/A Audi 4000 diesel. The fuel can be cranked up using the max fueling screw as we all know, but I didn't when I scraped the project a few years ago. My TD pump was not functioning properly, so I put this one on.
The motor is a true TD with oil squirters, etc. The K14 is not the original turbo. The turbo that the motor had on it after it was built was a T3 hybrid with a Renault Fuego hot side and a Peugeot 505 cold side. I had a stainless adapter that made it work. That turbo and adapter are currently on a 2.0 petrol hill climb rabbit, well the old car that I had put this motor in, converted to gas. It makes a ton of power.
Again, I never had the fuel cranked up enough to spool either turbo = equals a younger me becoming discouraged/broke and finally giving up.

Someone asked for more story... so here it is...
The car was build in lieu of my 4 credit science class at UVM. I graduated because of it! Anyway, it was built for the Mount Washington Hill Climb. I negotiated a free entry, sponsorships from Kumho, VDO, Sparco, etc. The motor was built by Ralph's Foreign Auto in Burlington VT, now in Colchester. They are known for building very fast BMW CSL racecars and Alfa racecars and VW's etc. The motor work was done in return for sponsorship and shop sweeping etc.
Ultimately the motor wasn't done in time to go to the hillclimb, the car was put together in a month. So the car went to the hillclimb with NA power from my mom's old '81 diesel rabbit.
The turbo motor went in later that summer or maybe the next summer. The turbo motor wouldn't start with the TD pump, so I swapped that out for the NA pump, which wouldn't spool the turbo. At that point, the summer of 2001 or 2002, I wanted to put the car on the road and drive it, but it had no sunroof panel, and no windows, and no directionals.
I wanted to put money in, but my first job at a renewable energy company didn't just allow me to write a check, and my good friend who helped me build the car in the first place had moved back home to Redhook, NY.
I got the directionals and stuff working and wanted to put windows in, but was always frustrated that the car didn't make boost. IF I ONLY KNEW WHAT I KNOW NOW!!! My 1.9 ECO diesel that I just sold was pretty fast with the pump cranked up.
The car then lived at my parents house until a few years ago when my buddy bought the shell with the cage in it for his hillclimb car, traded me a stock turbo for my big t3 hybrid, and pulled the motor for me. Since then the motor has lived in my barn. Waiting for another car to put it in. My Audi 90 20VT project, my BMW 325e that I've had for 10 years, and my normal life outside of cars keep me pretty busy. It is time to cut the fat.
Here is a pic of the car just before Mount Washington. http://picasaweb.google.com/knockonlockwood/RabbitWheels/photo#5052030222889455858

I don't see an oil line going to the turbo.
so it has some good and bad...
Hard to figure out what it's worth.
Any idea what you want for it?
And what is the block code?
-
I see the return off the turbo. It's rusty and blends in well. The incoming oil probably isn't visible from that angle.
-
I have a rebuilt 1.6TD motor with everything but the oil feed line.
Probably why you aren't seeing it
-
Alright I just put my knee in some 90W, but I've got engine codes and such. The block has a 16D stamped into it and I think that a TD block would have a TD stamped into it. However, I remember when it was being rebuilt there was something to do with the rod pins(?) that connect the rods to the pistons. The shop asked if I had another block or parts and I said that this had to be the one we used because of turbo internals. So, I am guessing all of the guts are TD. Justin Carven from Greasecar where the motor came from also sold it to me as a TD and wouldn't let me forget that he gave me a TD for a good deal. I ended up having the rod pins made custom from some motor company, they came in a box wrapped in paper and oil.
Head: 068 103 373N
Pump: 460 494 072
Turbo: 028 145 703E
I just found receipts yesterday while packing...in fact all the receipts for the car.
12MM Raceware HSK I am assuming those are the head studs. Rings, Mains, Rod Bearings, timing belt etc. gasket kit, thermostat, head set, rear main seal, cam seals...
I can't believe I still have all these receipts.

Hmmm... That Audi pump was from a 1.5 NA. Since the car wasn't registered or insured I was never getting out of 2nd gear in my parents driveway. Maybe there wasn't enough load or time on throttle. I wish I had could say more, but I was pretty green back then and was luck that I even got the car to start!
If it was now, I'd have the car tuned right, and I'd still have it. Maybe the turbo was spooled, my boost gauge never showed more than 3-4 psi. I guess I was comparing it to my Audi 5000 at the time with 15psi, that came on like a freight train. You'd plant your foot, wait, and hit 2500 rpm and get whacked in the back. I think I was expecting something like that, but I suppose with less than adequate fueling, boost pressure of less than 5 psi and no enrichment, I don't think you'd feel it. I always thought that without really working it sure was quick in a striped rabbit. It would spin the race tires when starting out. Hmmm....
-
By the way, I do want to thank all of you guys for asking the questions and kind of helping me to realize where I went wrong with this project. I just didn't know. Now it is interesting to realize what preventing me from having the car match the one in my dreams at the time.
I really had visions of grandeur, and a propane injection system that I never installed.
-
The engine code plate reads CY and then 11.
-
While at the moment I don't have money to buy it. (but I wish I did I've got a perfect car for it.) I'm in the middle of putting together a similar engine for a GTD project...
I know that your looking for offers but since I'm close or fairly close anyway compared to Utah, or Arizona. Out of idle curiosity what were you looking to get out of the engine?
And, what's the time frame on your move?
-Todd
edit: I should add, that depending on the price I think I'd be able to scrape the money together for it.
-
so all this motor really needs is the oil cooler & hoses, and a Giles Pump!
for all the work done to it, and receipts to prove, what a great buy!
how much could one expect to pay for a motor like this???
-
I like to think it needs a big-honkin' turbo too.
-
I like to think it needs a big-honkin' turbo too.
I'd take the K14 that's apparently on it if it's in good condition. That's big enough for meeee.
-
What kind of power and boost will the K14 sustain?
-
And intercooled is definately the way to go with any turbo vehicle.
-
That motor was newly rebuilt? And you put THAT waterpump back on it after supposedly spending all that money?
I call bull*** on it being rebuilt.
-
Ah...first I don't like people doubting the credibility of my posts, but if the doubter had read all of the posts he'd realize that this motor is not newly rebuilt, but rebuilt in 2001 and it has been sitting in a car and then in a barn ever since. The car it was in was never registered or insured.
Shall I start scanning receipts?

amen. i'd like to see someone try to have a motor look 'fresh' from 2001 up here in Canada... by 2007 the rust and corrosion have set in, and it really makes you wonder if the motor was rebuilt or not. receipt's would definitely crush skepticism, and compression tests would seal the deal.
i would definitely recommend this motor to someone who is thinking of building up a 1.6TD. pretty much all the tough work is done. just need to buy the oil cooler coolant hoses, the oil cooler itself (or switch to an air/air oil cooler that will not help stabilize the engine's core temp, but allow it to be run very hard!) and a giles pump, or a regular 1.6TD pump just to wake the motor up for now.
other mods like bigger turbo, intercooler, etc. can come at a later time of course. but this is a GREAT base to work with!

all of these fun posts really wake up the TD nut that is still in me. Anyone have a clean VW roller that needs a motor?
in response to that last post... I could always spray paint the motor black for that rebuild in a can look

hehehe!!! i'm getting my TDI 1Z block hot tanked & painted with some of that epoxy paint.. i'm hoping it will last a long time with our Canadian salty winters.
nice shade of yellow most likely... and the only reason for it, is to detect any leaks. (white would be the best to detect leaks, but.... no thanks  )
-
I need to go up north with a large truck and buy up all the TDs i can.

hehehe... once i get my m-TDI done i'll have a td kicking aroud... some guy may want to buy it from me though...
-
some guy may want to buy it from me though...
Is that me? or some other guy? Too bad VT is so far away, I have alot of shells kicking around
-
Oh, I guess I can't read,... but I can look at the pretty pictures.
Sooo. how much are we talking? $$$$???

well if you want the 1.6TD... i'm kinda looking to get maybe 650 or so for the complete motor though... turbo is in excellent condition, new rings, metal HG, rebuilt injectors, andy2's special pump...
it also has the windage tray. i've never gone over 5000km without an oil change, but well over 3 months... (only with synthetic though)
with synthetic it doesn't really burn oil. there's the overheating issue, but im' still convinced it's somewhere in my rad or an airlock. i will be getting my coolant system pressure checked before i sell the motor though... oh yea new oil cooler too
-
bump for the weekend!
-
how about some offers.
-
Wonder how much it would cost to have it shipped down here to SC... 'cause you're a bit far away to be simply driving up and getting it!
