hi, I just bought an engine from a wrecker, its a 1.6 and looks like an eco diesel - the LDA has a block off plate.
I put it up on wooden blocks, changed oil and filter - ran fuel lines into a bucket of diesel/ATF
the engine wont start, IP ok, solenoid clicks, fuel emerges from injector bosses - (took out my compression tester) no compression in any cylinder (took off head and saw that valves are OK, CC are ok along with GPs - when I spun the cam the valves wont open. took out lifters and they are depressing with finger pressure.
tried to purge them with oil (btw extreme black soot in the lifter) - left them for about 5 hours invreted but somehow the oil is replaced with air in the lifter unless its dipped in oil
any ideas how to service these lifters (cant buy them new here)

If memory serves, there s/b some valve lifting even if a Hyd. Lifter is flat (dry). Are the lifters going up & down but not the valves? Since this is a junker motor you might check to see that all the parts are correct. For one thing valves & springs are of different length between Mech. & Hyd. Motors. Not much can be done with worn lifters they are sealed units an s/b replaced. Mail order in US they’re under $100 for a set (Shipping to your location, I wouldn’t know). Might try a small nozzled squirt oiler to pump up flat ones, but the trapped air may not escape depending on wear/clearance of parts. Regards

Try towing it,the engine will build up oil pressure better at speed and it will probably start, the tappets will be ok once full of oil  they are cheap in the uk genuine ina tappets a ful set for £30

I would replace them all. If you don't you'll end up with mad ticking all the time. They are not serviceable, Once they are shot you have to replace them.

the valves were opening but very very slight - I undid the valves from the head - the valves are 95mm in length (which is correct for hydro head)
I undid one lifter and checked the piston, bore and check ball in it with a magnifier - its kind of scored.
if I order from the UK - I need to know some website from where i can get them, Ive got freinds in airlines who can carry them for me so I wont be charged customs duty.
