My Mk 1 Caddy is nearing the point where I'll need a good tranny to back the 1.9AAZ I'm building. Any suggestions for a good strong transmission for a Mk 1? Will the pre-cable-shifter Mk 3 bolt into the Mk 1?

mk3 020s bolt directly into mk1s with the exception of the input spline being larger... but you just need a different clutch disc, thats all. oh yeah and you have to change the linkage thing for the shifter... the little c thing with the 2 ball joint deals on it, just switch over to all the mk1 stuff. the only other issue you might have is with the reverse light which sometimes has a different switch... regardless this isn't a major issue.

what about the transmission mount itself you may have a problem i think some mk3 and eve mk2s wont have the holes necessary to bolt on mk1 brackets
why not just use your origonal one they are pretty strong.

i have a mkII (1990) o2o on an AAZ in a mkIII with no issues. holds up fine.
i've also pounded the crap out of the fn o2o in my 1.6TD rabbit many times. i like the o2o's. plus fn and ff have a good long 5th.
i'd try whatever fits up easily and has the gearing you're looking for. as long as its a diesel trans it should hold up. if they start letting go, start looking for a more customized solution IMO.

the difference is that some mk1 transmissions won't go into mk2 and mk3's because they don't have the necessary mounting stuff... but mk2 and mk3 trannies will go into a mk1 no problemo

as smokey said i dont think the later mkII and most (not sure) of the mkIII do not have the holes needed for the mkI trans mount.

I have been running my AAZ with a mk1 tranny (code FF) for nearly two years with no problems. Although I have not yet had Giles mod a pump for me I believe it will still withstand the more powerful powerplant. I have heard that the Vw trannys can withstand up to 300 hp. (?!!!) www.brokenvw.com has the best info about rebuilding and other info I have found and has a chart with codes, ratios and compatible trannies.
A problem with close ratio tranny codes after 14102 (14 Oct 82) is SMS or Self Machining Syndrome. They used rivets to retain the pinion shafts instead of the circlips used on the earlier tranny, which came apart and self machined a hole in the case. Wide ratio trannys did not have the problem but you may have troubles with mounts.

does anyone adapted a 1.9 tdi gearbox to a 1.6/1.9td?
i would like to have the long ratios but i dont know if it can be done easy and cheap...
it sucks to have all that power and still be passed on the freeway by car with far less hp... :evil:

www.patatron.com sells tranny mounts for the A1 chassis, I'm not sure what style the TDI trannys are (02A, 02J etc) but he might have what you need.

I got one. It's a DFP code from a 1996 Jetta. It has a 3.67 r&p and a .75 5th.
