Title: Turbo mod options
Post by: jimfoo on March 10, 2007, 04:42:05 pm
Holy crap, if that isn't the fastest shipping on e-bay I've ever had! I am now in posession of a brand new vnt-17. Anyway, I now appear to have 3 options that I can tell. Run the vnt-17 as is, put the vnt-15 in the 17's exhaust housing, or put the vnt-17 compressor wheel on the vnt-15, along with the vnt-17 exhaust housing. The reason I'm thinking about option 3 is altitude. What do the experts think would be the best option? I live at 7400' and usually 4-wheel up to 14000'. I want good throttle resopnse. Also, how the hell do you get the bolts out that hold the back plate of the compressor housing off? My torx just seems to want to strip them out.
Thanks!!! :D

Hey jimfoo do you have a center section for a 15? Mine is toast but i'm sure the rest is good. The casting is broken on the compressor side.

I have a brand new VNT-17 center section. I took the compressor housing and wheel off to put on my 15. The 17 has different oil passages, and also needs water however. I'm not sure what it is worth if it will work for you. I paid $320 including shipping for the whole turbo. I may need the actuator also however, and it takes a different one than the VNT-15. Let me know if you want pics. Actually the passages are just like the one on the GT2559 shown here. http://vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=5526&start=15

I'd be interested in the pics. Would the CS fit the 15? By different oil passages you just mean for the fittings? And its water cooled also?

Yes, just fittings, and water cooled. You would just need to put the back plate
for the compressor housing, the compressor, and housing on.

The VNT-15 actuator WILL work. The 17's is different because of the exhaust housing.
