As you may or may not remember, I was putting a VNT 15 on my AAZ in my Land Rover. Guess when I bought it, I didn't think about it hanging down further. The exhaust sits right in the middle of my starter. I would still like to put a variable nozzle turbo on it. What, if any, are my options? I assume some of the other ones are separate from the manifold. I want fast spooling as opposed to higher boost as I drive off road a lot and throttle response is very important. BTW if anyone needs a VNT 15 let me know. I paid $250 for it. Oh, I modified the actuator to work off boost, but it should be able to be changed back.

Could use a thick spacer on the exhaust manifold so it clears the starter?
-
i am with that idea and just heat sheild the crap out of the starter.
-
try flipping the exhaust manifold..you may have to clearance the tabs a little and clock the turbo..but it should work

thats an awesome idea!!!

Well, it would have to be close to 3-4". The thought crossed my mind. It could be a little thinner if I angled it, but it still would be a bit of work.
-
Do you have room in the Landrover to mount the manifold upside down and rotate the turbo cartridge so that your oil drain points down again?
-
No, the turbo hits the intake.
-
Wow, 4 answers within 4 minutes! I see Scopefrfd had the same thought.
-
Does the vnt 17 or whatever it is called, have the same configuration?
-
Can you modify a golf diesel starter and mount it on the opposite side of where your starter fits now? It seems to have a cover on it.
-
Nope. I had to have a custom adapter made to fit the Rover tranny, and that is the only place the starter would fit. I do appreciate all the ideas though.
-
Didn't see any there, and I don't do german very well, but it gave me the idea to search the UK. There might be some possibilities there. Thanks.

Shipping from the UK will kill you....the VNT 17, the early versions had seperate turbo housings, they're kinda pricey but very nice. I still think you're best bet is to flip the manifold and buy a turbo flange that are sold for guys making they're own turbo log-type manifolds. I think techtonics sells the flanges...and I believe they're 1/2" thick...may be enough to get by the intake. Also, I think a 1z intake has a very small profile width wise.

Is ther a web site? All I can find are exhaust systems, but no flanges
-
How is spooling between the different sizes of variable vanes? Like I said, I do want fast spooling, so what is too big? I had a k14 on it, so if you can use it for comparison, that would help. Thanks
-
TT sells the flange for $50, might find it cheaper somewhere else and it's 1/2" thick

poke a k03-003 on it. it was the stock turbo for late AAZ, and spools very quickly.

Flipping the turbo with a spacer looks like it would work, depending on your engine bay though
Are there any other starter options? IE a smaller starter

I don't think any other starter would help as it would have to be a hell of a lot smaller. Maybe flipping it with a spacer would work. Then I started thinking that maybe a homemade intake would help as it would be easier than making something for the exhaust. Too bad I screwed up my back at work today as I can't even stand up straight. Guess it will have to wait. Flipping it would work better for the exhaust than the k14. I had to make a really tight bend for it to fit, and even then it was close to the starter, the firewall, the wiring harness and the fuel and brake lines. Plus access to the flange bolts would be way easier.

Well my solution to the problem is that I found a GT1749V on ebay for $250 plus shipping with only 500 km. I will have to adapt it to my old manifold, but now I should be able to put it where ever I want. It was off a Nissan. There is another left, but only 2 hours to buy if anyone is interested.
