Post by: richclan on March 04, 2007, 11:09:52 am
Ok here is the rundown
2 months ago it drove great, and started w/warm, PO said was hard to start, price was right so bought it. sat for 2 months and now i'm tryin to get it on the road. its still cold out temps in the 30's
replaced 2 glow plugs
removed ip lines to get them in
used mity vac to get air out from ip return line (hope i got the right line)
also cracked line open and cranked till fuel came out.
glow amperage is 35-40 amps now
starter cranking speed is very fast / battery is good
pulled out high idle lever
lots of black smoke from tail pipe so i sure there is fuel
but no start

NEED SOME IDEAS????
thanks in advance

Injector pump timing. Also i would continue to try and bleed the pump.If nothing happens try a compression test

thanks

lots of black smoke is bad compression if the timing is right... either that or some really bad injectors...

remember that when temps were in the 50's the car started, (keep in mind that 2 glow plugs were dead) and now because  poor comp.,  lower temps and all glow plugs work it wont start,? that doesnt add up to me. i hope your wrong.

what is reasonable ccompression?

can i overcome it with some starting aid that wont harm the engine?

The wear limit, according to the Bentley is 412 psi.  There should be no more than 73 psi difference between the cylinders.

can anyone tell me the correct timing marks for this engine. ie crank, pump and cam marks.
even when temps in the 60's it still wont start, just lots of black smoke from the tailpipe
thanks

also if the timing is off will this throw off the comp test readings?

Timing shouldn't throw off your compression test (unless the cam is really really out... and if it was that far out you've be hearing big banging noises as the valves hit the pistons).

Timing on a diesel is more than just lining up some marks... the procedure uses a dial gauge threaded into the pump and a couple of tools to lock everything perfectly at TDC.

Search here and at www.vwdieselparts.net and you'll find tons of info, step-by-steps, pictures, etc.
