Anyone know if there is a list available? Or a breakdown of how many L, LS and other models that were made? Or does anyone know positively that when ran through a VIN decoder it will come up as a TD and not just a diesel or FI 1.6?

The mk1 turbo diesels were GTD's as far as i know,in the uk they are mostly golf c models,no gtd's were sent here  so i built my own

This is the best VW Vin decorder I have found. A Turbo I am guessing would be the "second lowest output diesel engine."

Thanks. I was looking there and it clashes with the other post that said "H" should be the fifth digit. So if that link is correct all the 1.6TD Rabbits should have "F" engine codes? Any idea what the "H" code could be? Or has anyone ever heard of the "H" code?
-
Here are some other VIN decoders. I did not find out your answer to what the "H" means as your 5 letter in your VIN in relation to what engine you have. It seems that the VIN is descriptive but at the same time very vague. I am not sure if the engine letters could vary between years either. Give these a try and see what happens. I remember seeing another VIN decoder while browsing website that users on this forum list in their profile, but it would take forever to find it again.

I have a factory 1983 Rabbit Turbo Diesel, GL model. I ran a carfax on mine and it told me it was a TD. 1983 TD production was around 80 units.
1984 there were around 400 produced.
I believe they were made early in the production run.

i have an h code (84 rabbit td L)

So my TD could be considered a GTD ? I have the origonal steering wheel logo "turbo diesel). What makes a gtd a gtd? For mk1 of course

Would you mind posting the first 5 digits of your VIN? I am curious if it has the "H" that one person mentioned, or if it is something else.

My TD Rabbit also has a H for the 5th digit.
Aren't the people on the Tex nice...

Does carfax show yours as a TD, or just a 1.6l FI diesel?

Carfax said mine was a Turbo Diesel...

Wow, thanks for all the good replies.
So it seems the "H" code is the key. Anyone know where we can verify numbers of them produced? I've heard 80 (for '83) and 800 (for '84), but never seen the source for that number. Just curious how many L, LS and GL were released in America.
-
My source who has close ties within VW got the production numbers for me. As stated before, less than 500 were produced in 83 and 84.
-
wow, thats good to know, mines a G

no GTDs for north american market smokey.
under 500 mkI TDs, didn't know it was that low. explains why they are hard to find in good shape.
